i have been looking at this. Black Ice at Stew-Macthen i found this: www.projectguitar.com/tut/blackice.htmthen i found this over at another forum: wanted to see what you guys thought about putting two mini toggle on/off switches in. one for one diode, the other for two diodes. if im not mistaken, one diode will give you a distortion sound, the two diodes will give you overdrive.... let me know what ya think. Tyler, Check out this thread first, then let's talk. A search will reveal that we've discussed this a couple of times in the past year, so you might glean even more "food for thought". sumgai

sg, thanks for the link. i suppose this is what i get for going on hiatus. i missed a few things that i would have liked to know. unfortunately, since im very new(in relative speaking to most of you) to electronics and wiring, i dont really understand a good portion of it. so i figure, given time, some experimentation may be needed.

Tyler, I'm sure you and JohnH are going to become very conversant in "diode-speak". Be sure you don't immediately try to snatch the pebble from John's hand, Grasshopper! ;D sumgai

Ive tried a few options with these passive clippers. Its worth having a go at, but better not to spend all the $ on that Blackice. For a couple of $, you could get a pair each of silicon, schottky and germanium diodes. Try them across the output of the guitar, either single, or in pairs in parallel back to back. You can do this as a mock up outside the guitar. i found the best was a single schottky in series with a resistor. This is a sound clip made a couple of years back. Its not great, rtaher a dry sound, but it shows a schotky in seres with i think, about a 20k resistor, wired across the output as a tone control. Its a direct recording to the sound card. Could do better, but you get the idea. The first part is clean, then with the diode. people.smartchat.net.au/~l_jhewitt/circuits/schottkytest.mp3John
