We have had many schemes to give the Strat aficionado the desirable neck + bridge option. A guy on Surfguitar101's forums claims that he accomplished this in his American Std Strat by simply switching the mid pup to the neck position and moving the neck pup back to the mid position. He claims the leads were long enough to allow this without rewiring.
Now, maybe this is commonly done, and perhaps I've been living under a rock and just never heard of this. And maybe his guitar is an aberration and the mid pup leads aren't long enough on most Strats to allow this.
But, if doable, it gives one N+B at position 2 on the 5 way, and it's humbucking to boot. It's free and easily reversible. Of course, M+B is lost.
If one was wiring a std. Strat arrangement from scratch, one could also make the mid pup leads long enough to allow this to be done later, if desired. I'll probably keep that in mind if/when I build another Strat-style axe
Anyone ever heard of doing this? Did I just fall off the proverbial turnip truck?

Well, I've not heard of many people doing it, but I did do it by mistake once on an Ibanez Roadstar Strat-type. I think that was a bit early on for me to realise why it was a good thing, so I just swapped them back.
I now have a Nashville Tele, so a straight swap wasn't possibe, but I do have that wired with the bridge and middle wires swapped, to give the N+B.

...and it's humbucking to boot. What's humbucking?

The N+B combo, since the RWRP mid pup has been moved to the neck.

Oh ,I don't know about that - I'd never heard of it either ; I've been kicking around the idea of doing that to my '51 , and was already giving myself credit for the invention . ;D
Now that I see it validated in print I think I'll have to make time for it this weekend .

All in good fun, but we all know that the humbucker design eliminated the problem of hum associated with single coil pickups. Basically, it solved the noise problem. Oddly enough, the anagram of the words "The Solver" turns out to be the name Seth Lover...whoa...scary, huh... Happy Trails Canyon Lice ...man, I've got way too much time on my hands...

Yeah, you and Mr. Mojo Risin' Weeny P.S.- "Canyon Lice" sounds like it should be the name of a cowpunk band.

Big Turnip, You fell off about 44 years late - the first time I did that was back in '65, and I did it to a friend's '62 Strat (which he still has!!) Only, I didn't move the pickups, just the wires on the switch. Back then, most of Leo's creations weren't yet set up with RWRP pups, they were all wound/aligned the same way. IIRC, the Jazz bass was the first to get the differentiated pups, right from when it was introduced back in 60. Fender's other high-end models followed suit over the next few years, as the existing stock of all-the-same-way pups were used up. A few years later, while working at a shop in Germany, I was asked to do what you described, physically swap the mid and neck pups, leaving the wiring alone. Net result of course was a nice surf sound (N+B in pos 4). I don't recall for sure now, but I don't think I had to lengthen the pup wires..... But that was during the Days of Jimi, so the owner had me put it back, then install what we now call "The Player's Switch", an SPST to send the Bridge pup directly to the volume control, bypassing the selector switch. Last I heard, it was still wired like that. (But that was some time ago, I admit.) So yeah, consider the possibilities of that new sound. It's easy to do, doesn't alter the guitar's appearance, costs nothing but time and labor, and is easily reversed. I think you know that I have (and use!) that option on my rig, right? HTH sumgai

Just finished this mod on my Squier 51 - I like it . I think I really like it . It's a minor adjustment to have pos. 3 neck only & pos 5 middle only , but at least it gets the hated middle only position off by itself . I have an HB at the bridge that's switchable for series/parallel - I think the "new" sound is most pronounced with the bridge pup set to parallel . I will miss the B+M setting , as ya never know when you'll want to play the Sweet Home .... lick for the 30,000th time . ;D Who knows , this may call for a Middle On Switch someday . -lpf3

All right youse guys, just stop it. The B+N position in lieu of the "the hated middle only position" has been available for years. The Megaswitch "E" Megaswitch "E" technical infoSwapping the middle and neck pickups/connections is a good mod in that it is cheap, albeit confusing to the operator. It's not popular on Vulcan (logic isn't). Since the deregulation of the telephone company, it has been legal for years to connect anything to anywhere that you want on a switch. What I find somewhat disconcerting is that this isn't obvious.

Aw c'mon Chris , I know the Megaswitch has been around for years , I just don't have one yet. ( It's on my list) This mod was fun 'cause it's so easy I could do it as a footnote to changing strings ,& just as easily reversed if I didn't like it . But that's not the important thing . You see, we got you to slip and admit that you're not really from around here. ;D ;D ;D ;D Live long & prosper . -lpf3
