Looking for a diagram for 1HB 5-way toggle

I have been surfing the net an looked threw here as well and noticed that no one seems to have done a 1 HB 5-way toggle diagram that would give you the maximum amount of selection for that single HB.

Has anyone here stumbled apon anything like this?

there are 6 possible ways to connect 2 coils:

• A
  
• B
  
• A+B
  
• A*B
  
• A+B out-of-phase
  
• A*B out-of-phase
  

5-way superswitches are easily adapted to that task.

one only needs to decide which 1 of the 6 possibilities to omit.



this has been done for a 2SC Telecaster (the A+B out-of-phase omitted) here:



it translates directly to a single HB.

Thanks!! that will give me something to work with. the guitar also has a DPDT switch as well. maybe there is a way to keep all 6. Will look at it

Unk, that works for a tele.

The difference here is that the two coils of the humbucker are at roughly the same place on the string. They should be indistinguishable - one from the other - when heard alone. In this case, it seems to me you could optimize your options by omiting one of the single coil positions.

Can't imagine what you would do with the other switch. A kill switch maybe?

Good point, I didn't think about the second single pos. It would be rather useless. I'm not really good at drawing up diagrams but I will give it a try (unless someone else wants to.) and see if I can get something useful done in M$ Paint.



To add more to this, I thought I would explain that this is just a guitar I am building out of spare parts for the purpose of trying different wiring out in it. Kind of a test bed. it houses 1 HB and 2 S (I dint have any spare singles except what came out of my strat and will one day go back in) So until I buy some spares, I am only working with the HB

In that case, it will make a difference which of the coils you use. You'll probably want to choose the coil that gives you hum cancelling when you combine one coil of the HB with one of the SCs.

good point, Ash. i mostly agree with that.

it's especially true, farther away from the bridge.

when you get very close to the bridge, the closest coil gets very brittle.

IMHO, usually a hum-canceling parallel OoP would be a better choice.

but, i avoid making value judgments on which choices are best.

often, all the facts on the exact application are not supplied on the first post.

in this case, there may be other reasons to have both singles available.

i didn't know that, but often these things show up as a thread evolves.

but, additional points of view, usually help illuminate the process.

Thanks for the welcome BTW.

I intentionally left out that information as I know there are plenty of combos that can be done with the 5-way switch and a H-S-S combo and didn’t want that entering into anyone’s mind in their response. I only mentioned it because someone stated that the left over switch really couldn’t be used, so I added the information just to flush out the long term Ideas I have for it.
I don’t plan to get 2 more single coils for it anytime soon, it will be a beater in my studio and not something that will likely get done anytime soon (other then the HB)

One of the reasons I was looking for a diagram of an HB on a 5-way is because I have herniated 2 disks in my back and they are keeping me doped up on Methadone. This is why I couldn’t reason out the wiring on my own. That is why I was hoping to find a pre-made diagram on it. With the Methadone, it makes it really hard to even do the basics let alone keep my mind on task to work out the wiring points on the 5-way 

Thanks again for the welcome, I am glad I found this place, I have been building guitars on and off for about 15 years now and have never had a place (or group of people) to bounce ideas off of before. I really enjoy this board and hope that when I am off this mess, I will be able to contribute what I can.

You didn't give the make of pickup or the order that you would like the tones.

This diagram uses the Seymour Duncan color codes. I tried to arrange the tones from mildest to brightest, but had to guess at what some of them sound like, so the order might not be optimum.

Achally, if your humbucker is one which has individually adjustable pole pieces, you can get significantly different tones by using one coil vs. the other.

For example, I have such a set up on one of my guitars, and I have one coil of the bucker with the pole pieces gradually raised higher as you go toward the top strings, and the other coil is normal. So I can definitely tell a difference between the two coils.

At the bottom there is one for a single humbucker and a 5-way rotary. Im not sure how that would translate to a super switch.

it translates perfectly, vF.

a superswitch is exactly a 4-pole, 5-position rotary switch turned on it's side, with a lever, instead of a knob.
