I'm a relatively new guitar player. I started hacking away late 2002 on a new (at the time) MIM Strat, and have been slowly getting better. In December though I graduate from college and graduate school isn't until next Fall. I figure I can use this lull to get as good with my guitar as possible in 8 months. Since deciding to do this, I've been thinking of ways to get a nicer sound out of my guitar on the cheap. I'm going to do the Quiet the Beast mod, and move to heavier strings for sure. I'm just wondering if there are any other good ideas to improve my guitars sound short of new pups and amp? Would replacing the pots with the no-load variety be worth my effort? Any of the mods on the original guitarnuts site particularly worthwhile? I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty changing things around, as long as I keep my guitar looking stock. Any tips are appreciated!

I think the best tone upgrades would include upgrading pickups, getting a new high end bridge and tuners, and maybe a new nut and even a fret dressing.

Buy a push-pull pot & try this: It'll get you a tele-ish sound with minimal $$$.

Noiseless leads would help if you not have them already, get some oxygen free leads for cheap on ebay.
I cant comment on the QTB mod as i have nosieless pickups in my Warmoth Strat so there not much point in me doing it.
Heavier strings DO make a difference, just dont jump from 9's to 13's straight away as your neck could go pop!
