Hi guys, need your expertise. Since my neck pickup didnt work anymore (only loud buzz) after trying the star grounding mod and noticing the burned spot on the 5-way switch I replaced the switch but the problem still remains. I get readings on the middle n bridge pickups in all positions from the 5-way switch. The neck is dead in all postions except in the middle/Bridge position, go figure. Have I got a shortcut somewhere? Springs from pickups? Wrong connection to switch? Pics provided here amigos: users.pandora.be/snowy/Guitarnuts/Elektronics before the mod: users.pandora.be/snowy/Guitarnuts/Before.jpgAny help apreciated.

Getting stranger by the minute When I add this switch for "neck-on" mod and flip it I get readings for my neck pickup in all positions except the bridge position. Just in case you guys are wondering, by readings I mean measuring resistance with a multimeter between signal and ground on a pickup. Pic with switch: users.pandora.be/snowy/Guitarnuts/Switch%20Neck.jpgI havent soldered anything yet cause I'm still trying to find the problem.

Somewhere I read this issue while browsing the mods: "There may be an increase in noise in the series positions. There will almost certainly be a loud buzz when you touch the neck pickup cover in these positions."
I think this is the case with my strat. When I touch the neck pickup poles and the switch is on neck position I get a loud buzz but no sound. On other positions all seems to work fine. Its like a shortcut somewhere.
Also on both my strats I still get the string ground issue (not touching the strings gives a slight hum), is that normal?

And last reply to this thread. I love this self-support forum The pickup windings must be broken somewhere else too cause I still get no readings after unwinding and soldering the wire back so the pickup is now officaly dead. Thank god this is just my old cheap copy strat. The noise remains though, so if that's the maximum reduction you can get then I think you guys need to check your hearing. I'll see what I can do with my new strat now.

If your neck pup had gone 'open circuit', ie, its wires are broken somewhere, then that could explain no sound and lots of noise, even with QTB. The disconnected wires pick up noise like an antennae.
I also had a neck pup that went bad for no good reason, with no abuse from me (other than the verbal kind). And I think Eljib had another similar case, so you'd be the third I know of. i relaced the pups with a new set from GFS.
Before risking another Strat however, I would advise caution. See if you can check that the work on the first guitar had no other problems.

Hi John
You would think by shielding alone the noise gets already reduced right but thats not the case with my guitar. Is it even worth the trouble to star ground my new strat? Maybe things could get even worse. It sounds to good to be true anyway, I wonder if you guys really have no more noise. Another question John, if I still have the old wiring except for string ground to shielding and vol pot ground also to shielding (wich can be elminated no?) do I have any ground loops in there that could enhance the noise? Thx for your support so far m8, appreciate it
