Howdy, friends. It looks like a lot has been going on since I last stopped by. Unfortunately, I've been so busy with school and work and remodeling that any guitar time I have gets spent practicing rather than researching or modding. Today, however, is a different story.
I volunteered my repair efforts to a friend who has been kind enough to donate studio time to me and my brother. Anyway, this friend had some guy install an EMG Select (Passive) HB in the neck on a not-too-bad LP copy he's got. It worked, but it needed lots of help. When I took a look at it (and peeled off the electric tape they used in place of solder) I found it to have red and white leads with a braided shield. Unfortunately, they twisted the two leads together and then attached them to a single wire, which they soldered to the leftmost lug on the neck volume pot. Though I have yet to confirm this, I think they cut the leads of the stock pup (which was a single wire + shield) because it was already soldered into place for them, and it was easier for them to twist the EMG loose ends to it, instead of soldering.
Output reads 4.18k from white to red, 4.32k from red to shield, and 8.52k from white to shield. Before pulling off the backplate and taking this all apart, the neck measured in at 4.29k when I tested it at the jack.
I cannot find any wiring diagrams or color codes for EMG passive pups. I want to get the most output possible from this thing because the bridge cranks in at 16+, and the EMG is barely audible in comparison. Does anyone know how these things work? My best guess is that the braided shield is ground, and that using white + sheild gives you both coils, and using red + shield gives you coil cut. I beleive that this also makes sense of the readings I was getting. However, another guess is that white is for series, and red is for parallel, though I can't see how that would give the lower output when both leads are connected.
So, what do I do? Connect only the white lead to the aforementioned lug? If so, what of the red lead? It seems strange to just leave it hanging there. Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm a little more familiar with SD's, and this EMG has got me very confused.
Thank you in advance for your help, -Aaron
P.S.: Sorry if this isn't as clear as it could be. Every time I preview my posts I notice how they always read so awkwardly.

Your assumption is correct. I had EMG Selects in my old Prodigy. Tape back and cover the red wire, and attach the white. They wanted to simplify the whole coil-cut mod to accomodate a SPDT toggle, and I'd say they did a good job, although that's your only option. I believe Stew-Mac www.stewmac.com sells these and may have the instructions in PDF on their site.

Thanks for the input. I've got it all wired up now and it sounds heaps better than it did before. Just one last thing: I wired it back up just the way it was when I opened it up, like this www.seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/2h_2v_2t_3w.htmlBut before I put the strings on I plugged it in to make sure I was getting signal from the pickups. When I put my hand near the bridge pup it started to make a VERY loud hum. I don't think I could get anything backwards because it only had one conductor. Not finding any mistake on my part, I restrung and checked again. No hum. What gives?
