well i finished shielding my les paul but it just didn't seem like the shielding helped at all... in fact i think I made the hum worse.
I used aluminum foil and glue method to shield and i think this is where the problem is. I brought out my multi-meter and tested the continuity between some parts of the shielding... the resistance is definitely not zero between some parts. So therefore i think some of the shielding might be acting as an antenna.
So does this seem like a logical explanation.
I think i might start over and use copper foil and solder to ensure good connections between the pieces of foil.

So therefore i think some of the shielding might be acting as an antenna. Assuming that: a) the shield isn't connected to the hot on your output jack, and b) the ground from your pickups are not connected to ground through the ungrounded* parts of your shield; that's not possible *by ungrounded I mean the parts of the shield that are showing significantly more that 0 Ohm resistance to the out jack's sleeve. These sections of the shield are effectively holes. That is, they're not shielding anything. If the noise has actually gotten worse since your shielding then either something went wrong in your wiring or something external to the guitar (amp volume, refrigerator running, proximity to the computer...) has changed. I think...

does it get louder when you touch the strings?
I jsut did the foil and glue method also, there is still some noise on the single coils, about 50% less. the humbucker on it is dead quiet. but, i did wire the jack wrong; it made it very loud. i reversed the leads, and problem fixed.
