I am in the midst of collecting parts for my first custom guitar (a strat) and I had some questions about wiring it up. I want to have a 5 knob strat. Either 3 for volume and 2 for tone or vice-versa. I'm not new to guitar wiring, but I have never owned a fender and the '5' way switch is still a bit of a mystery for me. My question is, with star stye grounding, how would this look? Also, my first reaction when drawing it up was to have the pots before the switch, but stock strats aren't wired like this, is there a reason for that?

Ok.... the infamous 5 way switch. The early strats used a 3 way switch, with one pole selecting neck, middle or bridge pickup. The other pole selects tone pots, with no tone control for the bridge pickup. The design was changed to a 5 way after players started wedging the switch between positions, allowing two pickups to be on at a time (bridge/middle and neck/middle) The electrics are the same though. The weird wiring for the tone pots is a relic of the 3-way switch era. There is, of course, nothing stopping you rewiring the tone pots to each pickup individually (which would be useful in the 'combined' positions.)
Star grounding- all the pickup negative leads go to a single terminal/washer/whatever, with a single lead going to the jack's ground connection. Simple as that.
