Does anyone know how rickenbacker pups differ from the ones we are so used to using?
I'm seeking info on both the toaster tops and the button models. I've heard talk of "scatter winding" if that jogs anyones memory.
Thanks

Scatter wound basically means there's no set pattern to the winding of the coils. Any hand-wound pickup will be scatter wound, and some machine wounds are too.

I believe Rickenbacker uses the thinnest wire of any pickup or guitar company. If nothing else this would certainly give them a unique tone.

www.rickenbacker.com/forum_index.aspThey recently added a forum on the company site.. you should be able to get any Rick related question answered there. I have a few Rick basses, and over the years have found really bad answers to Rick related questions from guitar repair techs who may really know their stuff when it relates to Fenders Gibsons etc. But don't know much about Rickenbacker. Once I had a broken pickguard and need a replacement... this repair shop that does great work kept telling me that it would take a long time to get the Pguard shipped from Germany. Uhh they're from California dude. The worst thing about a non-Rick minded tech is when they crack the fret board because they don't understand the truss rods in old Ricks. Heard those stories a few times.

In my opinion, Ric pickups sound exactly like, well, Ric pickups. I tried one in a Gibson ES330 once, and it sounded like a Ric. It's an aquired taste, and for me, Ric pickups are NOT good for distortion. Clean, they're fine for that jangly sound. (Kinda like the old Danelectro lipstick tubes.) Distorted, they sound like crap.
