Happy Easter guys! My daughter wants a hotter humbucker on her entry level Ibanez guitar. Now, instead of spending some bucks, I remembered I had two pups that I took out of my Jackson Randy Rhoads model. In the bridge JH-3, and in the neck position J-50N ( Both Active ) Now... I want to just install the bridge pup, so my question is how do I make the pup active again? All I have are the pickups. Nothing else. What do I need to purchase to make this puppy sing again? Also, what will they sound like passive?....crap I guess huh?

deep, Well, that didn't take very long, did it? Take note, this will not be the last time your daughter becomes dissatisfied with something, and wants you to change it! Errr, a battery? Aww, you blew my come-back line! No, wait..... They won't sound at all - no battery, no output. The coil's impedance is way low, on the order of a few hundred ohms. That's why the battery is needed, there's a small signal amplifier inside the casing. And any time you have a seimconductor junction, you get bupkis if'n you don't apply the power. HTH sumgai

Thanks Sumgai! Yes, I know. My daughter has asked me for an Gibson SG replica when she passes grade 8 in a few months....In a word.....NOPE!
I thought that the pups had to be hooked up to a tiny preamp or something. You know, a little diode or something along that nature. I didnt know all there was to it was hooking up a battery. btw... I DID know that active pups used a battery! I just thought there was more meat in between the power supply & the pickup itself.

Way to lay down the law deepblue. I get half (yes half) of an Epiphone LP, the other half is paid by MYSELF. But I'm not complaining.

You are lucky, DeepBlue, I got a set of pup's from the same model guitar, but they were the Reflex actives made in England...they have a 6 wire matching amplifier all silicone'd up so you can't figure out what goes to what... and so far I have found only one good reference to it... So, to all the great minds here...Can they (active pickups) use any amp or need something specific?
