So the wife bought me a new Fender Frontman for Xmas a year ago, and this baby's got to go to free up some space. It's the original Crate amp, model CR-1, made in the USA by SLM. Vintage like 1980 (?), serial No: 014388. 20 solid state watts into a 12" speaker. Features Gain, Treble, Bass, Master Volume, 2 inputs, Line out on rear. It all works fine, cosmetically it's good, a bit dusty, a few drizzles of varnish on the top of the pine box, some rust on the handle. And the pine crate has some scuffs, etc- (I think that was the point of these things) This is a great practice amp, you don't see many amps this size with a 12" speaker. It has a very clean sound to it, the gain control really adds very little actual gain. You'll need a stompbox of some sort to get any kind of overdriven sounds out of it. But it's rugged and US built! There are several reviews on Harmony Central: reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar+Amp/product/Crate/CR-1/10/1I could put it on EBay, of course, but it's been a good amp to me over the years (I am not the original owner). I'd like to see it get a good home. $75.00 US plus actual shipping/packing costs. If you're interested, PM me and I'll get the shipping quote together. I'll pack it well w/ styro, bubble wrap. etc. Pick up would be better yet. I also would consider a trade for a bass practice amp or perhaps a small speaker cab.

I have a CR-IIR, which is a slightly later model, that is currently collecting dust in the basement ... it's gotten a bit muddy over the years, and I considered replacing the speaker to see if it would help. Still, to have a couple of old Crates, there a hometown company, mine says, "SLM" (they may have changed names ... ) which stands for "St. Louis Music". If you're interested in some other parts, such as DiMarzio pups, Allparts necks ... stuff like that, or even a whole guitar, I may be interested in a trade ... it'd be fun to start a little collection of those old things ... I always thought they were the coolest, and gave Crate it's name.

j-
You are correct, it's "SLM", poor proofreading on my part.
And I have modified the original post so as to not confuse any other prospective buyers.
And I don't know, as far as a possible trade I'll have to consider it. If it's just small stuff on your end I might want some help with the shipping as I don't really want to be out of pocket on the deal. But I'll PM you as it's better to negotiate that way.

So, are
different than, say liquid state watts (or G.A.S. 'eous state watts as in lusting after a HiWatt)?
What matter IS the state of the matter?

Chris- Forgive a little salesmanship on my part. Watts is watts, of course. But I had to put in there somewhere that it was solid state and it seemed to flow nicely where I put it. Just a frustrated Madison Avenue type, I guess . . .

I have just been given this same amp (Crate CR-1), but it blows fuses when you plug it in. I wonder if it is worth fixing. I wonder where I could find a schematic diagram.
Thanks, for you help,

Chuck Barnett-
Hello and Welcome!
You are replying to an old post- my CR-1 is long gone.
You should repost your question in the "Amps" section, you're more likely to get an answer there.

Quick question since this was bumped, is that the original box it came in? It's pretty cool. You don't see that anymore...

wanner, Yes, back then, the name "Crate" meant it really did look like a crate for hauling fruit and such. They were pretty nice to the eye, and actually survived a lot of abuse, but like all else in this business, what works (for the customer) fell to the bean counters that somehow managed to get their grubby paws on the music industry. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the armpits of every MBA to ever *think* of the word "money". sumgai

Just to drag this thread further of field...I had the bass version of this amp years ago. It survived two cross country moves and never belched once.
This is one of those I wish I'd never let get away.
