I mean, "charismatic wit" sounds like too much .. hehe ..
And although we're talking about Fenders here, I'm actually a big Ibanez fan.

On the topic of vintage, and replication, I have one big gripe to make. A very big one.
...what in the name of anything that's ever made a musical noise does Fender think they're doing with their "Time Machine" instruments? Honestly. Please.
...okay, my first gripe is the price. Basically, if I get one of these things, I'm going to be buying what, at one point in it's production phase, was a perfectly built brand new shiny instrument. However, at some point or another before it even left the factory, it was decided that it should be chipped, cracked, rusted, tarnished, and dinged in an "artistic" fashion signifying faux age. And what do I get for this shameless blemishing process? Double to triple the price tag! Rediculous!
The second gripe is the moral and ethical implications. I for one have a theory or at least a personal code about instruments, that being that they are given character by their wear and tear. Each little scratch and ding has a story behind it, and even though many of them won't be so romantic as "Went nuts and axed my amp in my first live show," they still all -really- happened to the guitar while it was in the service of a real musician! Pre-denting a guitar for the sake of a vintage enthusiast's pipe dream of rewinding time to when he -could- have bought a '57 Strat is an outrage! It far exceeds debauchery in that it's -fake- and there's nothing more to it. I would -much- rather buy a new instrument, and make my -own- history with it!
...I guess I only have two gripes. But there they are. Fie on "vintage distressed finishes!"

i'm witchya on that one, RandomHero. and here's what i find funny: people dig those vintage instruments cuz of the sound and feel and so on--but also cuz of all the guys that played em and made em famous, creating those nicks and wear and tear. and who started of the RELIC/TIME MACHINE/CLOSET CLASSIC craze? keith richards of all people. fender custom shop made him a tele that he liked but he said it felt too new. "put a bit of wear and tear on it and i'll play it." so they made his guitar look like keith richards had played it for 30-odd years and others quickly started asking for the same thing. maybe i should start my own "RELICING" business. all i need is a sander and a sharp corner to hit the guitar on. maybe do some FX pedal relicing on the side... better yet, i'll tell my customers to "leave the guitar with me, i'll age it for you. please come back in 20-30 years!"

Another vote for NIXING the so-called TIME MACHINE--- --- Stories and History are written and or told by those who can write or use their imagination. We ALL know that the way one plays and treats their instrument creates their own personal TIME MACHINE. ALL of the guit's in my collection have personality and FLAVA, but "I DONE IT", not a overpaid LUTHIER that could be making his own "BEST PRODUCTION MODEL GUITAR POSSIBLE"--- - - --- Gimme your guitar, I'll put some age on it for you, but you won't be happy with it when I'm through!!!=== === I repair, fix, modify and restore, but if you want me to destroy your guitar and get paid to do it, then O-O-O-OK.--- - - ---

The issue has been resolved through private means. The moral of the story is to ensure that it's not the middleman's fault before attacking your business partner. Further discussion should be continues through private messages for the sake of not detracting from the topic of the board. Thanks, the administration.
