this is a design i came up with and i have it in 2 of my 3 HSS strats and it works great. my 3rd strat has EMG active pickups. this design is for passive pickups only. as others have noted, the pickups used are of your own choosing, as its a matter of personal taste, as well as the values of the pots and the tone cap. this is simply a variation on the wiring. this design requires the Bridge Humbucker to be 4 wire/splittable. the wire colors noted on this drawing are the colors used by Seymour Duncan. your pickups may vary. my design has a master volume, and a master tone, with 4PDT switch mounted in the lower hole, leftover by the removed tone pot. i use a couple of thin washers to take up the space. im not into drilling any extra holes in my pickguard, but there isnt any reason that you couldnt incorporate the 4PDT switch with a standard 1 vol, 2 tone setup. you just need to drill an extra hole. i have labled the 2 switch positions "NORMAL" and "TRICK". i have only included the lugs that you solder too, and not the "internal" wiper that actually makes the contacts. the center column of circles are the "common", and when the switch is in "normal" then the common makes contact to the lugs on the right. when in "trick" the common makes contact with the lugs on the left. the standard fender 5way switch is also used, but only one side. the other side is reserved for coil tapping. NORMAL is your standard 5 way configuration, with Pos 1 being the FULL Humbucker, both coils, in series. Pos2, kills off the lower coil of the Bridge Humbucker, giving you the middle pickup and the TOP coil of the Bridge HB. its more "quacky", and the volume change isnt as dramatic. the Ibanez Jem is wired like this. all other positions are standard. TRICK: in Pos 5, you get the neck and BOTTOM coil of the Bridge Humbucker, IN SERIES. Pos 4 is the neck and bottom coil in series, with the middle in parallel Pos 3 is 3 - standard Pos 2 is the middle with the BOTTOM coil of the Bridge HB and Pos 1 is the BOTTOM coil of the Bridge, single coil only bottom line: 10 positions, nine different configurations, all very useable, and NO DEAD SPOTS. there are some jumpings and loopings at the 4PDT switch.

After a year or more of experimenting, including wiring this design up in 2 of my guitars, and 2 for a friend, i need to add a "disclaimer":
ive found that sticking to ONE brand of pickups makes it alot easier to wire. mixing and matching pickups usually results in phasing issues, and not getting the coil you want from the humbucker. when you finially "get it" tho, the results are fantastic, and VERY user friendly. just dont be discouraged if you dont get the results your looking for right off the bat. general troubleshooting skills are required for this kind of mod.
