So, I'm moving along through my songs with the bass, but I'm having a pretty hefty issue with... uhh... things electrical.
The wiring in my Hock Shop (yeah, that's a proper noun in this instance) P/J is shot. The input does some really terrible things, and the pots scratch like alley cats in a hot tub.
So, since I'm going to have to rewire it anyway, I figured it was a good time to pick me up a pickup. I've never been a fan of J pups, honestly, and with this bass it's going to be a little bit of work to put those in. I went with just the P pup for now. Got a Fender.
Okay, to my question - I don't have faith in the pots or wires, and I have a tele I built that has the neck pup hard wired right to the input. No toggles, no pots, no nothin'. It sounds fine... Is this a viable option in this case?

Sure, why not?
Not a particularly Nutzy solution, though. ;D ;D

I know... I know.
It will get a little screwy when I start on those J pups. I promise!

I mean, I tried to rip those Js out and they're seriously stuck in there... I think there must be a screw or something underneath that plastic. I'm going to have to bust them up to get them out... Can't wait.
And this thing is shot. I've used floss thicker than this wire.

I can't decide which is stronger... My level of shame in wiring something straight to the jack with no fanciful toggling, or my desire for closure...
I'm picking closure, and hoping that the inadvertent bump doesn't cause anyone to actually read this... (shame)
It took about 10 minutes and it sounds like night and day.
Actually, no. It sounds like day and night. Day being the old pickup and night being after...... assuming that you're a vampire, and turn to dust when exposed to sunlight.
So there... I'm done for now. In two weeks I go into the trenches with it, but right now is one of those rare times in life when it's more important to kick @$$ with your instrument than it is to simply have a kick @$$ instrument. ;D

My strat's been without a working bridge pickup for months now because I haven't wanted the stress of trying to fix the thing between gigs. I guess I could have done it during the last month and a half where we've been playing acoustic, but they keep promising we'll be playing electric next week...next week...next week...
It is a nice problem to have. At least I've got regular gigs, even if they don't pay.

My ESP only has one pickup hooked up as well... But that's just because I'm decidedly miserable about changing batteries in actives, and I NEVER use the bridge anyway.
Now if SD made an active HB sized p-90... (it would probably be a huge disappointment? Is that how this thought ends?)
And yeah, three cheers for nice problems, ash.
