BTW Thunderhorse is more fun than the midnight crew at Scores.

Hands down, my two favorite Maiden songs are The Trooper and Power Slave. Are you going to be gigging with these? Or is it just for kicks?
I'm pretty curious in what gear you are using for these.
EDIT: I found the power tab files I used to learn The Trooper and Thunder Horse. If you want to learn it from tab, I might be able to find the original source that I got them from.

Just for kicks for now... It'll be a bit before I can nail the sweeps in thunderhorse well enough to gig it, since I would rather quit the band than take my guitar strap off of it's absolute longest position.
Dethklok tabs are pretty easy to find, since they made a point to release everything a while back, and I have a guitar pro cut of The Trooper that I just had to re-tab a bit, since I can't stretch 14 frets...*cough* Hallowed be thy Name I'm usin' bits and pieces from different tabs. About half Guitar Pro and half text... Whoever did the guitar pro tab is rhythm-tarted.
As far as gear goes, I'm using my ESP M-200 with the 18 volt seymour duncan livewires mostly neck PU with tone at 0 > boss ME-50 set to the "Metal" setting with the drive at 3PM, and "tone" at noon, the "bottom" at about 2PM > Marshall AVT with the mids scooped a bit on the EQ.
It's far from ideal, but... I'm gonna keep playin with it. It wouldn't mix well, but it sounds pretty good through the 4x12 five feet from my face.
Next amp is probably gonna be a 6505+ or 3120... *sigh*
I'm strongly considering getting some EMGs as my next purchase, though. Perhaps a P-60 for the neck spot on the Gibson along with a SPC on a long shaft pot to get my p-90 runnin low impedance? Hmm...

In Thunderhorse I'm having the most trouble with the riff Swisgar plays right after the sweeps... my hand just wants to cramp. I think I'll be able to nail it tomorrow... I worked on it for about an hour today, which probably explains the cramp, eh? I'm also doing Toki's sweeps instead of his. They're more fun.
I think we should do a new potluck jam built on a dethklok song. Give us young guns somethin' to shoot for!

Which riff? Where is it in the song? Also I currently have EMG 81's that I'm working on replacing. They came standard in my guitar, and they were AMAZING until I got the first Blackouts. I think the blackouts are much better, simply because they are more versatile. With the current Maiden kick you put me into, I'm still finding myself leaning towards the Blackouts.
I used the EMG loaded guitar for Eflat tuning, AKA GNR and Alice in Chains.
I tried doing a temp 18v mod on the EMG's, and they sounded a little better, but I'm still running through a SS H&K 60W. Not worth my time to do it for THAT amp.

I'd be willing to facilitate, but I won't likely be playing. Of course, I still haven't posted the "final mix" of the last Potluck Jam...

At the 30 second mark of the album version he's in the middle of the riff, Strat. It's an awesome riff... I was able to hit it pretty cleanly on my acoustic at my buddie's last night drunk as a fish, so I'm hoping that this bodes well for my sober play... if that ever happens... *cough*
And yeah the Seymour's are much more flexible than the 81s in my ears as well. My buddy has the Schecter c1 hellraiser I always go on about, and it has the 81tw and an 89tw, both of which have a single coil operation with a second "voicing preamp" wtf-ever that means. They sound good, though. Much more compressed sound, with a chunkier low end.
Even my mom, who hasn't played a guitar... ever... made one of her only tone comments in the last eight years and said that it sounded "lower" than the ESP when A/Bd on the AVT.
My freakin' MOM... haha
I also hit Over the Hills and Far Away spot on... and I mean SPOT on... which is of course not metal... last night with the aforementioned acoustic three Morgan and Cokes in, and my friend's very manly co-worker (think Salma Hayek's chin on Rosie O'donald's body... I'm sure I messed up the spelling on those names) looked directly at me and grunted. I dunno what the hell that meant. I think she was mad because Stephanie told her I'm single... I wish she would stop doing that... Or get better looking friends... Okay, I'm just going to log out...

Oh, and Roll Call for the metal jam, doods. As newey pointed out to me, we should probably not jam on a song like that so much as we should... "borrow" a riff and... ya know... not talk about it so much...
So who is in?
My guitar recording gear should be back in my hands in the next two months... So I have that long to learn how to play metal! This'll be fun.

Sorry for double post, this deserves it.
I may not be able to sweep pick with ANY accuracy, but I like to think of myself as a durn good rhythm plucker.
How are you trying to play that riff? I noticed that my natural tendency was to forget my pinky, but as soon as I forced myself to drop the middle finger and use my pinky, it sort of eased up.

Post by sydsbluesky on Apr 21, 2010 20:29:09 GMT -5
I'm using pinky for the7th on the A with the 1st finger on the 4th fret, then moving it to hit all the notes on the 8th frets on the A and D. I can't reach from 4 to 8 very well without my pinky... small hands kinda forces me to use the right fingers... I think... I've never taken lessons, so I dunno.
I don't think I'm using the middle finger for any of that riff except for the single 6th fret on the low E... or whatever tuning you wish to use.
I was able to clean it up pretty well... now I need to clean up the sweeps!
And yeah, hopefully I'll be able to get my recording rig here and get it running soon.

I don't play metal, but I'm game if anyone else wants to play. And if I recall, the final version of the first Jam had lpf3 playing some MIDI guitar piano...do you still have those tracks? HTC1

If my neurons are firing correctly, I recall that the first thing we did for the blues Nutzjam was to pick a key. With metal, we also need to decide if we're using concert tuning or not . . .

You know, newey, when I first read that it made sense, and I think I dig your point. After I've been thinkin' (and drinkin') for a while, it starts to unravel.
Unless you're talking about the possibility of alternate tuning reference - as in A <> 440 - I don't think it matters how the individual instruments are tuned as long as they agree on a key...
...or should we say a chord progression? In my experience, metal music tends to ignore the conventional ideas of key structure. You could say there are a lot of accidentals. If you want to get fancy, you might say that it modulates frequently. When I see that many notes in that short a time-span which do not all fit in the same key, I say it's chromatic.
Somebody'd oughta come up with a couple of riffs that we can string together and maybe loop through a couple times to form a basic structure. Or maybe one person chuck a riff out there, somebody else come up with the next one, and we string them together before adding leads and whatnot.

You're right- I was mostly thinking that so much of metal uses drop D tuning for powerchords. While that doesn't really affect what others do (assuming we're in the same key), I was more thinking just generally we ought to be on the same page to start with. Handy info, not required info.
Funny you should mention those "accidentals". My guitar teacher is currently trying to get me to think of those in terms of being just a measure or 2 in a different key. Theory is, however, one of my weak points . . .

Thanks to a wonderful accident (sarcasm) my gear will be in from NY soon!
I'll be able to record here in the coming week or so, and I'd be happy to throw out a riff or two.

IMO, metal is more riff oriented than key or chord progression oriented.
Also, what genre of metal? It has become a monster, this rock and rolling these kids do today. Are we looking at glam, heavy, thrash, speed? (BTW that's mostly the 80's)
My vote would be something sort of blues/metal-ish. Deep Purple meets Alice in Chains.

Last time we agreed on the progression, then we worked out the drum track...(actually, Ash did the whole thing)
Depending on the "genre" of metal, the tempo will change accordingly.
Again, I defer to the gentleman who know the style better then I to step up and call the tune...pun intended...

Some types of metal have frequent tempo and time signature changes as well, so I think it's really kind of anything goes.
Like I said, I'm thinking it might work best if we have one person provide a riff or two, then maybe somebody come along and send in another, and another, maybe loop some stuff, and jam it all together into a big old opus.
Then it'll be a free-for-all for people to add overdubs on top of the basic "structure".
I'm not real confident in my drum programming for a metal record, as it's not a genre I deal with regularly. We could probably track to a basic metronome click and fill the drums in collaboratively or whatever.
Before we get too far, I think we'll need to review some of the guidelines and concerns that I posted at the beginning of the blues jam. I'm thinking actually that info might need to go in a sticky on this fancy new board we've got. I'll get around to that sometime soon...

Good suggestion, let's set some ground rules. Your original suggestion to use only .wav files (and not .mp3s) saved Cyn and I a lot of grief- and I for one would probably not have figured out what the problem with synching was without that tip.

I'll happily throw out a few riffs, but I'm still without my computer interface.
Maybe I can get something decent from my hand held recorder using an external mic? I'll try tomorrow.
I also vote for some acoustic in the mix... That's actually probably where I'll start.
I really hope I can find a power source for my mixer... the one that came with it is still in NY with my interface... *grumbles* Nothing can be easy. Without that I'm without a phantom power source.

Sounds good. Maybe I'll as Chris, my metalhead buddy, if he wants to contribute.
See if I can get him back into the spirit to write...
P.S. - I'm not a metalhead either, so my personal contributions won't be too far outside of the "rock" box.

Any suggestions on tempo, length...etc...?
Toss out some examples and I can probably fake it...
