This thread has now run to 12 pages and we're seemingly no closer to an actual track. Before we get too far afield here, where are we at with this project? As I recall, lpf3 laid something down a long time ago, now ozboomer has chimed in- what's next? Just trying to redirect this a bit . . .

That's a tempting offer...my money is going in to the virtual world (is there a VST reverb tank, hmmm) Amplitude has a suite of software ( a review) that includes the reverb tank emulation... but it was too expensive for me, had too much stuff I didn't want and it didn't even work properly on my PC. I think that sums it up. 'tis just that I listen to the recordings and I can't quite visualize what's happening. I watch the videos and it seems like there's an anticipation involved, that I can't quite time correctly... and whether the 'right'(!) (let's say 'classic') thing to do is a dip... that comes back into a fast vibrato.. I think. I think I'm my own worst critic and I'm trying to be perfect after only a year or two of trying to get the thing happening... I guess I'll just keep plugging whammy-ing away in the hope that some magic happens one day when it sounds right to me...

Just trying to redirect this a bit . . . Now THAT's Deja-vu... Unless c1 wants to hop in with something different, I think we're working with c1's drum track as frozen. lpf3 and I have had a go with some guitar tracks but they sounded too different/out of balance, even though c1 reckons he could do something with 'em. The final 16 or 32 bars are still really floating; I had a progression there but I'm still re-working it (amongst all the 'build' projects).. So some things are going on... just that we're slow ( I am slow) and we're easily sidetracked(!)

I had a feeling that the 'track' had kind of been 'abandoned' but I certainly had fun a while back with the backing track and making up melodies...
...
There are a bunch of classic surf 'moves' like the 'dip' which is a timed semitone thing.
There are lots of nice whammy moves though...anticipation sounds like you are thinking the 'scoop' which is used in a lot of genres at times. Not sure so much in surf, but Holdsworth has a nice touch on this, Alan Murphy was great on it and of course Jeff Beck does all things whammy. Basically it's a pre-bend into a note, so before picking you need to lower by about a semi tone and let it 'scoop' into the note. The reverse is a 'drop off'. A good inspiration for a lot of these articulations is with horn music, Miles Davis has a lot of these kinds of inflections, most sax or even harmonica players will scoop into notes and drop off. It's just like bending, it needs a bit of practice and a lot of them are more subtle than you might thing and controlled in time and pitch.

oz,
If you can bend a string with your left hand at the 'correct' moment in the piece, then you can use your right hand to 'bend' that same string/note, at the same moment.... using your vammy-bar (yet another ChrisKism). Your Muse need only become ambidextrous, and before you know it..... ;D
Seriously, just play along with Jon in that video, and like anything else, you'll soon get to the point where you're covering his every move, with no hesitations.
In my estimation, vibrato is most tastefully done with only one instrument at a time, but sometimes ya just gotta take it to the limit. If both (or all three) guitars have put in the practice time, then when they dip the same amount, at the same time, it's a jaw-dropping moment! Not too often that you'll see this.

My dear sumgai... Your Muse need only become ambidextrous, and before you know it..... ;D Well, THAT I can understand.. It certainly is a timing thing for me to get a handle on, though... and the depth (subtelty) will come, I expect/hope.. It's like currently, I'm trying to learn how to play some of the melodies from favourite tunes (like, Mr Moto, etc) and they're coming out staccato... but at least I'm getting the notes Ok (mostly). Learning to play single notes/melodies cleanly on guitar is still a battle for me... but then, I 'spose I AM coming from how many decades of playing keyboards ...but I'll try playing along with the videos - hadn't even crossed my mind, even though I DO play along with audio tracks... Duhhh.. Edit: Revisiting the video... Wot was I thinkin'!!? I'll never play along with that! (the tune.. ) ...but I get the idea... and can try playing just the whammy bar parts, I guess(!) A couple more of interest, from a "bandcraft" point of view (guitar parts) and some more whammy-ing featuring John Blair: Surf Rider ... and Pipeline ...as always, I thin' I need to walk before I can run ;D

Well...for all you Strayanz... FWIW, my experience of Billy Hyde here in Good Ol' Adlayd is that 'whatever' is listed on the website is usually only a guide to what you can get it for if you turn up at the store (thankfully, the main one here is in the next street to where I work ;D ).... ...perhaps I just have that winning smile (or they decide to get me out of the store before I die of old age and give them a bad name), but I usually manage between 10 and 20% off depending on what it is...helps if you have cash in your hand too... ...my problem is that I would probably (if I was so inclined, and I'm not, thankfully, phew!!) end up just 'having' to have the real thing...that's the problem of having owned a BF Super Reverb in about 1964......and then having sold it a few years later... There, now have I repatriated the thread sufficiently...

Oh heck. Over a YEAR and still not (another) blow struck.
This has been hanging-on too long.. I'm gonna have another go at it, methinks... I'm waiting for some bits for the next 'mod fest'(!), so I have nothing else to work on (Riiiight)...
I hate when I let things drag out so long... *grrr*...
