I think a congrats are in order for JFP, given the amount of discussion generated by his OP and by far compared with the other T&T threads. Perhaps it would have been better titled JFP's Youtube playlist...

Yes, this has become "The Thread That Would Not Die" . . .
I have come across several M to m songs during lessons recently. But I'm not sure if they've already been mentioned, and I'm unwilling to browse through 7 pages!
So, a playlist of those so far listed would be a huge help!

Man, this is awesome! Nice! Yes, this has become "The Thread That Would Not Die" . . . Or, the thread JFP would not let die Haydukej, I reposted your list on my OP, since other wise, your list would get burried. Because, next week, I'll be doing the dishes with the tunes on random and ... MAJ MIN!!

First off, a Nutzy thanks to haydukej for his compilation of "life so far..."! Second off, I read the entire list, but not with the intent of error-checking it, only to see how wide a variety it has. Oh boy, it's got variety in spades. But..... In my opinion, Hotel California doesn't qualify (pg 3, ijustwannastrat, 5th post down). The point of this thread is to demonstrate a flattening of the third - by definition, that is what Major to minor is all about. Such simply does not happen in HC. In fact, not-too-carefull examination of the chord progression will reveal that it's nothing more than a circle of 4ths, descending. Quite clever, but not unique - Pachelbel's Canon, anybody? (And yes, you could say it's a circle of 5ths ascending, but that doesn't convey the intended tonality.) Further, I see HOTRS listed as on pg 7, by 4real. At least Pete said "relative effect", but I disagree. Actually, the change begging for resolution is going in the opposite direction - we hear the tonic going to the 7th (D to C) and the 5th going to the 7th (A to C) - within the Dm, we already have an F, so the third didn't change by going to FMaj. That resolution is secured by ascending to GMaj, thus completing the D structure, but also giving us the 7th of A (or Am, in this case). But my point is, no matter how we analyze it, this is not a case of flattening the third of any chord within the progression. Similar in that it begs resolution, but not quite the exact same thing. By the way.... you all do realize, don't you, that simply by sounding out a Major chord's 6th, you have effectively made it a relative minor, eh? Be careful not to do this with a 6-string bar chord, as the remaining 5th (on string 5) will clash a bit with the 6th found on string 2. A perfect example of this is found in Spiderbait's version of Ghost Riders In The Sky, wherein they did purposefully go from 6 strings to 5, just to avoid that problem. (String 5 was open for an A.) I'll not go any further, my meds are starting to kick in, but.... I just wanna say, Toni Fisher's The Big Hurt is credited with being the first publicly released recording of a flanging or chorusing effect. Check it out, but I think you'll find that it was intentional, not a mistake, as was earlier thought to be. Not to mention, it was one of my favorites on the radio at the time, and I still like it. I just may have to get the Other Half interested in it. Hmmm...... Later sumgai

Also, page 7, The Letter doesnt fit. No Milk today kinda does. Hotel California and HOTRS are non fitting, as well. I dont argue the 'relativity' of hotrs, but it doesnt go on the main list.

Were we to allow relative Major/minor changes to qualify, then certainly Oh Pretty Woman would be the hands-down champeen of all time! In point of fact, I'm gonna postulate that JFParnell's whole original intent was to observe the immediacy of sought-after resolution. Going from Major to relative minor is, as I pointed out above, akin to adding the 6th to the chord - that's not seeking resolution, such a chord stands on its own merits, and is (usually) pleasant-sounding and complete... i.e. it doesn't demand that something else happen after it. In contrast, while we play lots of stuff in a minor key, and love it, it's the interaction of moving from a proper third (a Major interval) to a flatted third (the minor interval) that leaves us hanging - we want that resolution, regardless of the key signature of the tune in question. The key word there was "moving" - without movement, we aren't drawn into the progression or flow of one note following another, it's all static. Often that lack of resolvable movement is desired, or at least desirable, under certain conditions. More often than that, though, we tend to seek a path through the ebb and flow of the notes, and we tend to enjoy the juxtaposition of "linear, straight to the point" versus "wandering off the beaten path". In fact, this very factoid accounts for how we, as a culture, determine our likes/dislikes and tastes in music. The same sociological way of thinking applies to all cultures/polities/societies/etc., trust me on that one. Enough of the pedantry - let the show begin! sumgai

Girl From Impanema - Antonio Carlos Jobim

I suppose fellow nutz should contribute a song to this thread at least once.
The Dead use this progression in the bridge. Even though it's 1981, Turn on, tune in, and drop out!
B D A Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange, B D A Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain. D A G Lost one round but the prize wasn't anything, D Dm A B A knife in the back and more of the same.
