+10 for omitting the definite article Even as a child, I knew better. I would cringe (and also laugh outrageously) whenever my mother would ask about "that band 'The Cream' . . .".

The Enchanted Sea - Islanders
A major to A minor during the outro.
I came to know of this beautiful classic through Martin Denny's version.

It's been a few months since we've had any contributions to this ginormous thread, but playing this one last evening in my guitar lesson. Good ol' Roy: This has the G to Gm, but just like I noted a few years ago (and a few pages back in this thread) it also does that D--D+--G--Gm thing. Seems like whenever I run into an augmented chord, that's what it's doing. A hootload of songs have that progression.

Dire Straits The Man's Too Strong (YouTube) has some major/minor dancing. At first, the song's strongly in d minor - it has a g minor chord to fortify that feeling. Soon, though, it's in G major, with a D major chord to support that. Then, blatantly, a tonic G major chord is is followed by a g minor chord. It's to get us back to d minor, and there's no attempt to hide the shift behind any lengthy chord progression. Later, some that's perhaps more standard Maj to Min stuff: C major to C minor (in G), followed by F major to f minor (still in G, but modulated to C).

Love T.S.McPhee, me. The credits on that link reveal two different composers and neither are as you've quoted but since it's t'interweb I'm not going to be accused of promulgating a même. That said, I reckon it owes a lot to "Come On In My Kitchen" and the proper Fleetwood Mac have mined that seam too.

...which of the seven-or-so iterations would that be? IMHO, anything including Heroes Are Hard to Find and after fall into the improper Mac category. I liked some of the Bob Welch period, but the point and purpose of the band seem to leave when Pete Green left... So anything after 1970 would be suspect up to 1974, which appears to be the "scattershot" period...with the Lindsey Buckingham period being the "art for art's sake, money for God's sake" period...and his departure triggered the "ash heap of history" period. That wasn't too snarky, was it? HTC1

cynical1- I'm pretty much with you there, although I liked Future Games a lot from the Welch period. Saw them live twice during the Buckingham-Nicks years, regardless of what one thinks of the more MOR stuff they were doing then, they definitely put on a good live show back then. Most rock biographies are predictably atrociously bad, but Mick Fleetwood's book (the title escapes me at the moment) is one of the better ones, well worth a read. Fleetwood Mac always reminds me of the line from Spinal Tap: "Do you know how many people have been in this band? 54 people!"

I held back for twelve hours or so because it's forking JFP's great thread, but then I gave in. "I can resist anything except temptation".
Back to the thread then and Robbie.
I don't know what key Danny Kaye's version is in because I play it by ear, heavily influenced by the linked version except I have my guitar tuned CGCGCD. I played it to Robbie once and he scratched his head and said "You're on your own!"
My effort goes:
C_____F ___________Fm_C_______C7 There once was an ugly duckling

Minor Plagal Cadence 4real introduced the term to this thread here: guitarnuts2.proboards.com/post/52137 JFrankParnell re-introduced it here: guitarnuts2.proboards.com/post/87912 What does this mean? Why is it important to this discussion? We should compare the Plagal Cadence to the Minor Plagal Cadence. Plagal Cadence: IV ➔ I The IV chord shares one tone with the I In the key of C, the root note of the I chord is C. That C is also the fifth of the IV (F) chord The root tone (F) of the IV chord resolves down a semitone to E, which is the third tone of the I chord. The third tone (A) of the IV chord resolves down a whole tone G which is the fifth tone of the I chord. The F causes tension and gently asks for resolution down a semitone to E. The A resolves down a whole tone, which is comfortable. Minor Plagal Cadence: iv ➔ I The iv chord shares one tone with the I In the key of C, the root note of the I chord is C. That C is also the fifth of the iv (F) chord The root tone (F) of the IV chord resolves down a semitone to E, which is the third tone of the I chord. The third tone (A flat) of the iv chord resolves down a semitone to G which is the fifth tone of the I chord. The F causes tension and gently asks for resolution down a semitone to E. The A flat causes even more tension and screams for resolution down a semitone to G. A video by David Bennett popped up in my youtube feed, which discusses this. While David is a piano guy, he also spends a good bit of time on music theory. I've cued up the section of his video to the point where he examines the resolution. It's visual, in a way I was unable to capture in my text. description.

The Wailers - Why Did It Happen To Me

Post by sumgai on Apr 20, 2023 12:05:29 GMT -5
[youtube video] The Wailers - Why Did It Happen To Me I found it interesting that Golden Crest actually still had some outtakes that didn't make it to wax at the time, from way back in 1959. And here I thought I had everything that TFW had ever done, live and/or studio. Notably, these guys are from Tacoma, WA, yet they traveled (by car!) all the way to Long Island, NY, just to record their first few records. Why they didn't use one of the several studios based in Seattle or Tacoma remains a mystery to this day. Now, my nomination for the best live album ever, regardless of quality of the recording - The Fabulous Wailers At The Castle. The very original release (1962) had only 12 tunes, but later releases had more, as many as 16 or 18. Some later editions had two dozen tunes, a few of them recognizably not from that magic night. The entire album, a later version, can be seen here: For you Jimi fans, yes, this is the source of his song "Spanish Castle Magic" (from Axis Bold As Love). When he was a lad, Jimi went to The Castle just like the rest of us, because that was where the Big Boys played what the teenagers wanted to hear and dance to. Additionally, for you proto-punk and garage fans, these guys were the foundational inspiration that launched The Kingsmen and The Sonics, not to mention numerous regional bands that never made it to the big time. Even at my age and physical condition, I still want to cut a rug every time I play Wailers House Party. Enough nostalgia - thanks Mr. Parnell! sumgai
