Hey I am figuring out Thordendals "I Galactus" solo from SNW and found some nice runs in it. There's probably a tab on it, but I want to get it by ear before I go get the tab. Solo starts at 06:58 and the run 07:39 I love how he plays this octatonic stuff (octa meaning 8 and tonic some kind of drink). Here's a small run I really like and in my enthusiasm want to share with you, however as always, feel free to throw up in disgust ;D start on the low string and skip to the next string in b5 steps. Use legato and sliding. Here's the pattern : 7 - 11 - 8 - 10 So 7 hammer on to 11, pull of to 8, hammer on to 10. My fingerings are 1 - 4 - 1 - 3, if you keep your 1st finger pressed down all the time, you get this nice small bend effect when pulling off to the 8 while your first finger is sliding up. In the solo he plays this on the D string and his guitar is tuned a half step down, you'll figure it out. As with all licks, they only sound great when used right and Fredrik is a master at that... Now on to Zeta1 Reticuli ...

I love how he plays this octatonic stuff (octa meaning 8 and tonic some kind of drink). its what naturally happens after you have had 8 gin+tonics before you start to play a solo

Harmonic minor is different going up than coming down so there's actually 8 unique notes there. That's probably not what he meant.

the scale I am referring to is the half/whole scale (thats what I call it anywayzzz) I like the sound of that and it offers so many possibilities, (I just need to find them hehe)
it's easy,
there are 12 notes. If you start on one and go up a half tone, then a whole tone, then a half again, a whole again etc... you will reach the octave again after 8 notes. That's it.
To make good use of it... that's another thing ;D

I have never heard such a scale. It's kind of unnatural to play...

I know it all sounds "out of key" to me too Nevertheless, if you use it good (like Fredrik does) it is so beautiful... Here's a solo I recently learned, also from the same album... feel free to throw up in disgust

Huge Thordendal (and Meshuggah) fan here. Great job on Z1Reticuli! I totally lol'd at the video outro, haha! I've played around with those "half/whole" scales before while just experimenting. Never really knew what the proper name for it was.

thx dude!
don't know if that is the correct name of the scale, but who cares? As long as you can recall a scale, the name doesn't matter. I call the wholetone scale 'the disney scale' for instance (for obvious reasons hehe)
