I have some GFS pups, and I'm thinking they are very overwound for my tastes. They are singlecoils, so could I just desolder the eye, and take a couple hundred winds off, resolder the end to the eye, and give 'er? These are cheap pups, and I'm just thinking it would be nice to have some mag pups with the graphtech ghost system I'm putting in soon.

In theory, yes, you could do so, if they aren't epoxied/lacquered/waxed etc. into a solid brick. But in practice, not so easy to do without destroying the thing. It probably would take more than a few tries to get one that still worked after de-wiring. As you say, they're cheap, so if they're not to your liking, stick 'em on Ebay and use the proceeds to buy ones more to your tastes. That's what I'd do, anyway. Otherwise, "cheap" could become "worthless" real quick.

newey makes a very good point. Couple that with the fact that single coils can have 7500 to 10000 wraps...you may be at it a while...
Generally, but not always, if a pickup has fewer wraps a heavier gauge wire will be employed.
The correct amount of tension needs to be employed based on the gauge of wire. Too much and the wire stretches...
If you know the resistance of the pickup now, which is only a partial non-indicator of sound, the amount you remove will also depend on the gauge of the wire in there now.
If you're not concerned about turning it into a refrigerator magnet then have at it. If you're looking for a particular sound, then, if it were me, I'd dump it and find one you like out of the box.

Thanks for the input. My thought was to have a Mid/Neck combo ( no bridge pup). A couple thousand winds? hmm... How about 48 turns of some 14 AWG? ;D We have tons of spare laying around class. But in all seriousness, I understand the issue with unwinding the pup. I may just have to lower the pups even further in the body, that might help with the color of the tone I get.

The easiest thing to change, and should be everyone's first impulse. It can make a huge difference.

Correctly speaking, it means "don't go over there". Colloquially, it means roughly the same as us saying "don't go there". Thus, "I ain't goin' there!" is an apt statement, being in the current linga franca and all......

No, that would be "Ich weiss nicht" - 'I know not'. (Most of the European tongues consider our construction of grammer to be backwards, but we all know who's correct, eh? ) As to why we're changing over from our normal modus operandi, you'd have to speak to wanner about that one - Ich hab keine ahnung! (I have no idea.) sumgai

As a kid, I always thought of my grammer as backwards, but then, she was a lot older than I was... +1 As for the deutsch sprecht, my german teacher said I would never use my very broken german in casual conversation. While I know that the nuthouse is for serious business only, my accidental spelling of house as haus kicked my ADD into gear.
