I've been meaning to post this question for some time. I'm wondering if anyone's ever tried installing a pre-amp directly into a guitar to get a decent clean boost? If so, how hard/easy is it? I read about Wolf's "Solo Switch" and I'm intrigued, but I'm assuming you'd have to play with your volume at half mast for it to work, and then wouldn't the tone of the guitar change without volume being at full blast? Thanks!

Maybe an existing product like the EMG After Burner can serve your needs?
