i'm rewiring my ST and i'm in the market for some high gain passive pickups around $40 any suggestions??? the guitar has an hss config with a strat setup 1vol, 2tones & a 5way switch and i'm on a really tight budget so nothing too expencive (if it helps i play metal) primarily rhythem but occasionally switch to lead i'm still learning to play with speed in the higher register

sbg-
Welcome Back! It's been awhile.
Most of the more "budget" pickup makers make an overwound "hot" passive coil variety for more metal-ish tones. For my money, Guitarfetish's GFS pickups have a lot of bang for the buck, but I haven't tried their "hot" versions as that's not the style I play. I suspect they're equally as good as their standard varieties.
Of course, the active circuits for metal are another thing entirely (To me, active pups seem like a "new" thing, even though they've been around for years- I'm old enough to remember when they weren't around!)
But for passive pups, I've always found the "hot" ones to be a bit lacking, somewhat harsh sounding. You might consider not going that route, and getting a lower-output passive pickup, and then using pedals/processors/your amp to dial in the metal sound you want.
Remember, back in the day, that's how most metal guys did it.

as far as pedals go i've got the dod death metal distortion, ibanez tubescreamer, the rat distortion+filter(the vintage one not the remake) a dinosaur chorus(which sux i dont recomend) and a classic crybaby wah so i've got pedals and i'll be looking into those pickups you mentioned i'd also like to say to future posters on this thread that body routing is not an option for me so active pickup's are out of the question the only changes i'll be making are in the electronics and strings

i'm not trying to sound rude in saying that it's just i want to keep it in as close to stock appearance as humanly possible i'll change pots, blades, jacks, and pickups but i cant bear to cut or drill into her

For $40.00 your best shot is eBay. SD, DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence and Kent Armstrong all have offerings in the range.
Lawrence's L500 series ranges from $40.00-$50.00
Armstrong's Motherbucker ranges from $50.00-$65.00
The SD's and DiMarzio's have numerous offerings you can score for less then $40.00 if you're patient.
Make sure you know whether you want ceramic or alnico magnets as a lot of the "metal" high outputs are going to be ceramic as a rule.
newey makes a very good point in using your amp and effects to get your sound versus just driving the amp into distortion with the pickup. Your clean tones may suffer accordingly.
Slash uses low output alnico 2 where Dimebag used hot ceramic Lawrence's for a time.
Your fingers will determine more of your "sound" then the pickups, anyway...
Happy Trails

and other than the pickups i'm doing some modding as well ''compliment's'' of wolf i'll be replacing the standard 5way switch with a 3way and switching the pots for push pulls the vol, in the up pos, is a neck add & tones 1&2 will be coil splitting for the humbucker when both are in the up pos, its a bridge add

Cynical beat me to it on the pickup suggestions. Regarding wiring be aware split humbuckers can sound anemic compared to a regular single-coils. Don't let that dissuade you though, if you wire it up and find you like it then great. I'll mention another simmilarly single-coilish sounding mod that's retains hum-cancelling and easy to apply: local series/parallel switching, especially useful for the neck pickup IME.

i've decided on Carvin ap11's ($29-$39 a piece, & $9.95 flat rate shipping on all parts & accessories)and converting it from hss to sss via a humbucker 2 single coil ring mount($3 on ebay, $5 after expidited shipping), and i'll be doing my own discreet version of the double barrel strat mod as well i'm currently revising my diagram so i'll have it posted up momentarily as well.

and here it is the diagram i'm gonna use on this project it's a double barrel variant with absolutety no invasive cutting drilling or routing required!!! I'm using 2 DP6T rotary's to gain a bypass on pos, 6 of switch #1, and pos,1 of switch #2. going this route i'll have 'just' the stock 5 sounds 'or' the combonation sounds. my volume has been converted to a push/pull to add a passive overdrive in the up position.

and the 5way blade selector has been converted to a 1/2 a varitone switch. with a .022uf at pos,1, a .039uf at pos,3, and a .050uf at pos,5. now as for the other two positions, pos,2, is .061uf, and pos,4, is .089uf. pos, 2&4 are great for playing rhythem and or metal (if not both at the same time) while pos, 1&3 are standard strat tones, pos, 5 is perfect for the humbucking combo's such as b+m or m+n, ect... pos, 2&4 in those same combo's would be great for rhythem and or metal

all in all i've counted 125+ switch combinations with just the two rotary's and the varitone. that number has increased even more with the addition of an onboard passive overdrive. Thus creating one heck of a tonal beast!!! ;D and still keeping a totally stock appearance.
