You won't get any difference on a strat type and the cover is plastic...a tele neck pup perhaps, but the cover is a part of that design and sound (though I have seen them with the cover off. Potentially, and i think shecter or someone made them, you could make a bigger bobbin and wind more wire if it was built that way, without a cover.
The other thing is that with a true single coil, you can't put the pups too close to the strings as the single polarity on the strings can cause "stratitis" strange harmonics and intonation problems and such.

i've got some asian knockoffs that sounded muffled and i got curious and took the covers off because i read a post on the carvin forums that said the covers over the coils will hinder the sound because it dampens the magnetic field produced by the coil coincidently when i removed the covers they went from a muffled sound to an aggressive & percussive one although its not 'as' percussive & aggressive as i would like it doesn't sound muffled anymore so i got lucky and saved a good bit of $$$ too

but what gets me is i was also told on carvinbbs when i posted the initial question a user by the name of ncdan said unless it had flush poles that did 'not' go through the cover it wouldn't affect its sound but it did and if it isn't suppose to change why did it i'm getting confused about it 1 side says it'll change another says it wont i did it out of curiosity and found they did infact change the sound of my guitar now whats confusing is the 2 groups 1 saying it will the other it wont

MetalGawd, My suspicion is, when you removed the cover, you replaced the pickup back into the pickguard/body such that it was closer to the strings, thus resulting in more aggressiveness. It's a stone-cold fact that plastic has no magnetic properties, and throughout the history of the guitar, no person, no company, certainly no independent testing agency, has ever proven that a plastic cover can affect the tone of a pickup. Make that a period, end of story, and so on and so forth. Even more so, the fact that the pole pieces, whether they are flat across the pup or staggered, are exposed directly to the strings, which in turn means that there already is nothing to get in the way between them and the strings. This also applies whether the pole pieces are magnetic themselves (nearly all Fender pups) or they are merely metal rods, with the magnets underneath the pickup bobbin (nearly all non-Fender-style pups, such as Gibson, Carvin, you name it). Although I must say that most higher-quality clones of Fender pickups also use magnetic pole pieces, and that some of the cheaper Squier and other very-low-end Fender lines come with the magnets underneath the bobbin. Of course, over the years the 'design specs' keep changing, so I don't advocate that one should try to date a particular guitar by how the pickups were made. My statements are meant as a general guide (on this topic), that's all. Now, in the case where the polepieces are completely covered by the plastic... I still stand by my assertions above, that plastic can't affect the pup's tonality, but if the cover is removed, then it's quite likely that in putting the pup back into the guitar, it was mounted closer to the strings. newey, my co-Admin here, has a bass that he built that way on purpose. I suggest that you confer with him on the tonality he gets from his axe. Before I close out, let me conjecture here. This is just to throw us both a bone, so to speak. I don't think it's likely, but it certainly could happen, that a manufacturer would devise a pickup cover that has metallic particles embedded within the plastic itself. Now why they'd do that, I dunno, and if the thing weren't connected to ground, it wouldn't be a shield at all, but if there were enough of those metal particles, then I agree, that could affect the tone of the pickup - covered versus removed. But if no other reason than how expensive this would be, I don't hold a lot of hope that any company would do this. And lastly, this is a favor we ask of you..... when you refer to other forums, or other websites, could you please include a link to them? That way, we might be able to figure out what they said that caused your confusion. I've personally seen some pretty clever people out there, I can understand exactly what they're trying to say, but they can't write down their thoughts worth a hoot! (Not to say that I'm any better! ) HTH! sumgai

(another downfall of a psp my above post is my max allowed type spacing) now with all due respect since my post has gotten admin attn, i'm not trying to pick a fight or start an argument (espesially with an admin) but i thought of the height thing too so i lowered the height to the point one more it'd fall off with both the covers on & off and its drastically different i can't explain it nor do i understand why its happenig i'm calling them ''incognito'' because whats not supposed to happen is ?

now as the other ref, carvinbbs.com under the tech talk topic posted by me is ''pickup variations'' in which i was asking about the differences in pickup styles ncdan was also the user who replied to it and i was refering to something he was saying about 'magnetic' pickup covers so i appologize for that it was a miss remembering i'm under a great deal of stress today because my girlfriend is going through a major surgery and i'm only on hear to keep busy so i'm not dwelling on it, when i'm wrong i admit it

another downfall of a psp my above post is my max allowed type spacing Well, that explains your prolific posting. ;D Don't worry, I wasn't thinking that you were getting combative or anything, it seemed to me that you were confused and looking for answers, that's all. I'm sure no one else here has any problems either, so sit back, relax, and let it all flow. I'll mosey on over the the Carvin BBS in a few moments, and see if I can dig up the thread you're talking about. Stay tuned...... sumgai

the pickups i'm talking about were transplanted into my b.c.rich ST about 4,1/2 years ago from an $80 ''first act'' strat clone and the poles are not magnetic they have a ''ceramic'' bar and sounded like crap until i did this now they sound 1/2way decent their not the best sounding but its a temp fix cause lets face it cheap pickups is just that cheap i'll be replacing soon with 2 carvin ap11's and a carvin c22b humbucker at the bridge they fit my price range and are highly recomended

one of the problems is when playing in overdrive the neck sounds like crap but switch on the neck add switch (N+N) and switch to clean its as crystal clear and warm as a med-hi $ pickup.thats were i found the tonal differences in the covers cause with the covers it sounded good but like someone had a pillow over the amp and now without it its clear&edgy the middle still sounds like crap just more distinguishable but i hardly use it anyway

i did remove the cover of my dimarzio hs-3, simply because i was fed up with filing/sanding the pickguard!! I did not notice any difference, expect the fact that it is now black instead of white (oh and did i say it fits the pickguard holes
