'lo all... I'm working on a couple of projects at the moment and I'm after a black and a brown tortoiseshell rear cover plate to suit a Squier Affinity strat (so, 2 plates). I've already tried dealing with 3 or 4 of the... 'more well-known on-line sellers'... and in all cases, they've sent me the wrong thing. Their listings talk about the plates being suitable for 'import' or 'Asian' guitars but they seem to be confused... and they won't go and measure the hole spacing on the cover plates for me either. Now, don't misunderstand -- I accept that the mounting holes for the cover plates will not match-up; that's just like the pickguard on the front of the guitar -- almost NONE of the 6 or 8 pickguards I've bought in the last couple of years lined-up perfectly with the previous pickguard's holes. No, the issue is that the rear plates string holes are at the wrong spacing. The string spacing on a Fender Stratocaster Standard tremolo bridge is 11.3mm. However, for the 'Asian' Squiers, for example, the spacing is actually 10.5mm. This means that by the time you measure-out the 6 string holes, the last hole will be in error by ~4mm or ~5/32". Perhaps a diagram will help. What follows is what I need, having the smaller string spacing and the offset central mounting holes:- ...and you'll note I want to get the '6-hole' version, not the 'single, wide hole' version. So, if anyone knows of an on-line seller who can supply something suitable (at the $5 mark or something, that is -- I am NOT going to pay upwards of $30 for a little bit of plastic, thank you!), I'd appreciate hearing about it... ...unless someone would like to go shopping at their local market/guitar seller for me Fanx! Well, I've worked out a reasonable compromise now... I'll make-do by making the cover I have a 'modern style' version and give it a single opening, made by drilling-out the bits between the holes (getting rid of the incorrect spacing issue)... and I'll smooth-up the 'remnants' with a file. Not too much effort, really and I'll end-up with something like:- O'course, I'll have to fill and re-drill the holes in the back of the guitar... but I have some room for that... and I'll be careful to see WHERE I'm drilling by looking in the main cavity before I go wildly drilling in the back(!) The results will be on-display when I get TheProjects completed John

Well, that seems like a reasonable solution.
Aftermarket parts can be annoying, to say the least.
I was wondering, did you try an "Authorized" Fender dealer in Australia? Not sure what they'd stock, or what they'd charge, but I found this on the Fender Australia site:
Cranbourne Music Blackburn ph: 03 9878 3900 fax: 03 9878 3406
101-107 Whitehorse Road Blackburn Vic 3130 Australia
email: sam@cranbournemusic.com.au
Of course, you could always do what Hendrix did and just leave the cover off...granted, the neighbors may not appreciate the volume required for it to feedback on you...but hey...

I always leave the back cover off so I can "play" the springs. I found that the knife on my keychain hanging on my belt hit just perfectly at the string cavity. Looked like I was doing very strange things to the poor strat, and sounded like it too! About the only thing I'm going to miss now that ive got the hardtail Xavier.

I just looked at the back cover I picked up for the Fernandes and it came with the slot as you have pictured, versus the 6 individual holes. Never paid any attention until you mentioned it...
And as long as we're in the Hock Shop...anybody want to trade a 9v battery box for a new unused 5-way switch?

I was wondering, did you try an "Authorized" Fender dealer in Australia? Not sure what they'd stock, or what they'd charge Whatever they'd have would be exhorbitant... and most of the guitar shops, per se, don't even stock parts -- you often have to go to a tech and they'll definitely charge like a wounded bull; Example: CTS pot from most anywhere in the USA on-line = US$5. In any number of places in Aus, they're A$25. Pffft. Well, they only opened that shop (about 5 mins' drive from me) within the last few weeks and I haven't been there yet to check it out... Both JohnH and myself would often mention Allans or Billy Hyde Music (which are now the one company)... but places like that seem to (mainly) consider strings and pickups the only 'parts' worth carrying. If I was looking to buy locally (on-line), a couple of places I've tried before have been Pure Tone and guitaraust... but already there, you can see the variation in prices... I've started working on the drill-cut-trim process and it's workin' Ok -- not super-smooooth but it'll be Ok. More to show'n'tell... e-ven-tu-al-ly. John

And as long as we're in the Hock Shop...anybody want to trade a 9v battery box for a new unused 5-way switch? i've got the cheap import (pcb) 5-way switch from this: www.guitarfetish.com/CLOSEOUT-Cream-Pickguard-with-Aged-knobs-and-pickups_p_2586.html that i desoldered and had in my newest partscaster for about twelve hours until i replaced it with a switch i got in the mail the next day that i wouldn't mind flipping you if you wanted (i'd have to doublecheck that i didn't maul it)

Actually, I have a spare 5-way switch. I need a 9V battery box for Project #3. The one that came one it was missing the cover...and when I removed the screws it just fell apart... The guy that had this guitar before me was a real jackass.
Thanks anyway.
