Well, I was fully expecting to go for the Toneriders, but found a guy in the UK who will hand-wind me a set of pickups for a reasonable price. £100 all in, in fact. I had never thought about whether the polepieces should protrude from the bobbin or not, the material of the grounding plate, or whether to pot the windings in wax or shellac, but I was asked, and picked based on a loose description of the tiny difference each might make to the tone. I may or may not have picked the exact perfect ones for me, but the differences are apparently not vast, and the fact I had the option at least points to the fellow knowing how to make a flipping good pickup. Oh, and they'll be RWRP in case of a hum emergency!

Andy, just out of curiosity- would they happen to be Heavy Air pickups? I know that guy's in the UK, & he's in that price range, too........ FWIW- I have a set of Heavy Air pups (for Tele) & love 'em......... -lpf3

No actually! Despite leafing through Google, that is the first I have heard of Heavy Air. Information super-highway indeed! I would certainly have considered them had they shown up before.
I went for Rock Monkey Pickups, he offers a similar service (prefers to build to order) and builds amps too.
