Ok, this is probably just SPAM, but I prefer to think of it as reaching out to my friends for help in fulfilling a dream. Lorenzo's Tractor has entered and been selected as one of 20 local acts competing for the opportunity to work with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. If I win this first round of voting, I believe it narrows down to a smaller handful who will get the chance first to adapt an orchestral piece to my band's style, then to adapt one of my songs to an orchestral style (I think a chamber orchestra, or smaller subsection), and if I make the final selection, to receive a small commission and the huge experience of creating an original piece to play with the full orchestra. I'm actually up against a number of people who I consider friends, whose music I actually enjoy and respect, but I honestly believe that Lorenzo's Tractor is the only right answer to the whole question. Some of the other acts come close, but none of them really have the potential to create the unique, singular experience that we could. I think that our recorded material bares out the fact that we have always written with a bit of a symphonic, orchestral sense. Arrangement and orchestration, drama and contrast, everything that makes a great classical music piece shows through in LT all over the place. The problem I have is that all of these other bands are far more popular because more accessible. Most of them actually might get votes from people who have never heard of them before just based on the links provided. LT maybe not so much. So I'm asking all my friends to mash that vote button as many times as they can remember. I've determined that you can vote once per day per IP address (or whatever), so you can actually vote daily from your home computer, every computer at work, your smartphone, your tablet, all the computers at the school's computer lab and the public library... Vote Early Vote Often Vote Lorenzo's Tractor

Yup, done for the day (and 2moro is another day, another vote!)
sooo, how do you feel about translating your stuff into all those pages of dots, squiggles and semi-quavers that the classical folk need?

One from my office computer just now, another tonight from home.
I like the fact that it's the Duluth-Superior symphony. Superior Wisconsin usually ends up with the hind teat where Duluth is concerned . . .
BTW, there was something on there about adding a voting widget to one's website. I don't know if that software is compatible here or not, but we can try to put the widget up if it's possible.

You people are awesome! Yup, done for the day (and 2moro is another day, another vote!) sooo, how do you feel about translating your stuff into all those pages of dots, squiggles and semi-quavers that the classical folk need? Way back in the beginning, I actually scored out everything by hand on paper. I'm sure I could do it again if necessary. Maybe Reaper 5 will finally release and include the Score Editor they've been promising. Then I should be able to just play it in via MIDI from my guitar. Honestly, though, I'm hoping there will be a guy for that. One from my office computer just now, another tonight from home. I like the fact that it's the Duluth- Superior symphony. Superior Wisconsin usually ends up with the hind teat where Duluth is concerned . . . Yeah. Superior kind of sucks. I actually live about 5 miles south of Superior in Douglas County, WI - thus the studio name Five Miles From Nowhere - but I hate to admit it out loud. IIRC, Souptown was actually bigger and richer than Duluth for a while there in the heyday of shipping and trains and whatnot. They also sent me a flyer to print and distribute, but it's lame compared to the one above. Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by rejecting their art and using my own. IDK that the widget is necessary, but I guess I wouldn't mind if you found some place to stick it. <script type="text/javascript" src="http://nnc.upickem.net/engine/SubmissionWidget.aspx?PageType=VOTING&ContestID=173145&SubmissionID=77722589"></script>

Thanks so much, guys! You literally are my only hope. Course, I'm telling everybody that. Last night, I actually had the bassist from one of the other much more popular bands in the competition agreeing with me that LT had a better potential to actually use the orchestra for something unique and interesting than her own group. I explained to a few people who are friends with the other bands that they can actually vote for all of their friends if they have enough devices. I'm having a lot of fun with this part, and trying not to be too hopeful.

I voted again today, from home. I'm not sure on the javascript coding for the widget, so I'll hold off for now on that as I don't want to screw anything up. (SG would know, but he's off RVing.)

Thanks again to everyone! We won't know the official results til after voting ends with August, but next time you go there, look for the drop down box in the upper right and select "Most Votes" and then watch my number change from 4 to...
We're actually fricking winning this thing!!!
Still a long way to go, but those other folks better step up their game. I'm friends with almost half of the other bands on Facebook, and I've seen like five posts about it in the last month. Granted I don't see every single one of all of their posts, and there are other avenues for this kind of promotion, but both Luke and I post daily reminders, and I've got flyers like the one above all over town.

Hate to bump it again, but I post daily reminders on my personal Facebook page, and people thank me cause otherwise they'd forget. We've fallen to number two with two weeks left. This round selects a number of bands, but I don't know what number, and I think being #1 in the poll would make it a moot point. It will also be something to mention going into the judging round.

Thanks bunches guys! They have now taken away the "Sort by" option, and kind of made me question whether it was actually working to begin with... ..yeah, when I tried one of the other sort options (I think it was 'Most Recent' or something, I got the same result... once...and then later, that wasn't working properly either..) g-f-b ..still voting everyday until you tell me to stop...

it's 9/12 here... what's happening? ?? IDFK! I know we didn't win, and I know a couple of the groups that did get in, but they are apparently still waiting for confirmation from the bands that were selected and will make the official announcement with the final rankings on 9/18...supposedly...maybe?

Here are the four winners.Ryan is a great guy who plays music I wouldn't really listen to on purpose, but won't turn off when it comes up. I've seen him do a really convincing version of Blind Melon's "No Rain", and he can hit the high note on "Take on me". Mary is an awesome chick, but I don't get into her own music so much. When I first saw her, she was pretty much just another one of those coffee shop girls, but she has been branching and rocking out a bit more recently. She recently took over as the vocalist for a really great local dark electronic/industrial group, and she sounds exactly like the dude she replaced (because they go through a vocoder) but is a lot nicer to look at. Space Carpet includes Charlie Parr, who is one of our local "big names". I respect the way that he pushes the envelope of the banjo-picking old timey thing, but won't pay to see him, and like the flyer in the OP says... Big Wave Dave is fun, upbeat old school funk rock. Mostly covers, I personally thought they were pretty good for white folks in MN, but my dad (who played those songs when they were current hits) was appalled the time I took him to see them.
