I must say, you're stuff is sounding better...and it's nice to see the Ibanez getting some use.
I may have to check out the new Ardour. Does it handle vst plugins yet?

Happy Trails Cynical One manual.ardour.org/working-with-plugins/windows-vst-support/From what I understand, one would need to download the sources, go through documentation, read the make files, grep through the docs/sources for VST and WINE, tweak config and make options for VST, and then correctly re-build Ardour for VST support. Ardour still crashes (some LV2/LADSPA plugins crash) from time to time, so I guess it would be more unstable when custom built for WINE/VST. However LV2 (Ladspa V2) are not crashing the way they used to.

Well, that's not encouraging. I tried Studio 64 (a 64 bit debian distro with most of the audio tiger traps pre-installed\configured) about 10 years ago. It was better than trying to configure Linux from scratch for audio, but, it struggled all the time...in a word, it sucked. Ardour was not horrible back then, but not a lot better than a trial version of most 2nd level Windows sequencers...and crashed like a paper mache motorcycle in the rain.
I went with Windows, since it did what it said on the box...but I held out hope that before Windows 8 took hold the penguins would flush out their suite into something competitive with Redmond, WA. It seems that never really happened. Sad, really, because it doesn't seem to be much different with open source than it was a decade ago. I really hope they get their crap together on Linux DAW workstation software soon...Windows 10 is here...and that's more scary than configuring JACK...
That aside, your recordings are sounding much better. Keep it up.
On a completely unrelated topic, how's the 7-string Ibanez doing these days?

It is very stable, didn't adjust anything in months, not even changed any strings. In the winter it went around zero, but now it went almost 20 Deg up, and it's still stable. This tech did a great job. I met him down the street with his wife looking for the sushi restaurant and I was one click away from buying them the dinner. About Ardour and Jack, Ardour improved a lot. Guitarix still sucks, although they redisigned the GUI, but I couldn't get any useful tone out of this, so I am just using the boss ME-25 which also acts as an USB audio interface. Jack improved also, and it is very stable. One thing I found out is about video shooting, one could use the pulseaudio module for JACK and use those webcam or USB cam recorders like e.g. Guvcview, and grab audio from the pulseaudio device which is instructed by JACK to use Ardour's output. So one could shoot real time video with good audio quality without the burden for extra editing afterwards.

Nice work! Really channeling your inner Gilmore there! hey thanx!!! there are two guitar tracks rythme and lead. The nice part is that I did no video editing, all were realtime. Also there was no speaker involved, all were done digital.

I'm not a big metal fan and still hold to the theory that Ronnie James Dio was the infection vector for Muppet voiced metal...I liked the video.
While I've always liked your Balkan Improvisation video...and Malmsteen on your daughter's 3/4 Strat copy is certainly a crowd pleaser...I have to say that there is a noticeable difference in the sound quality of your latest videos. Whatever you're doing is working. All you need now is the spandex...
It's good to see the Ibanez out and about, too. Knowing how close that thing was to becoming firewood it really is a testament to your tech's talent and your Terrier like focus on making it right. I respect that.
And if you're taking requests for said 7 string guitar...how about Gray Pianos Flying or Epilogue for Lisa ?

Thanx for watching Cyn1. Too much luck with the Ibanez for sure! Shawn lane is beyond my technical abilities. I am preparing some Anthrax (more spandex!!) for the next Vid!
The nice part here is that everything is done in real time. No video editing of any sort. Audio recording is done in Ardour5. Video recording is done with guvcview, in the following chain :
Audio : guitar -> boss me-25 -> (USB) -> Kubunt laptop 16.10 (non realtime kernel) -> Jack System in Jack : system in -> Ardour5 track in Jack : Ardour5 monitor out -> pulse audio in Guvcview : read audio from pulse audio out Guvcview : video encoding : raw video out (minimal CPU usage)
This way I can have all-digital recording, HD video all in one go. The only problem is I forgot to add some cab emulator consequently the guitar solo sounds a little dry, however this would add CPU load. (The ultra low action of the Ibanez starts to bite here, I gotta change strings - new setup )

Yeah, recording digital is great, but when you start banging up on the ceiling of your hardware it can be very unmotivating.
I'm still building up the DAW...shoemaker's kid syndrome...but I'm glad I have a workstation board and chassis to work with. Laptops have their place, but as a DAW they just were never expected to have to work that hard so the flexibility becomes hamstringed for you as the user. I've always used a desktop or workstation as a DAW, so I can't begin to feel your pain.
I really think another video with the pink guitar is in order, cab sim or no cab sim...
Take a closer look at Epilogue for Lisa. He wrote it for his sister who was killed in a car accident at 19. It's more emotion than technique.

gd,
I just looked at YouTube (the USA edition, at least), and there are many 'copycats' doing Epilogue For Lisa. All the better for you, someone even did a backing track and posted that.
I also vote for your version to appear soon, on a YouTube near the rest of us!

OMG I didn't know Shawn Lane had died. I'll do the Anthrax first while I'll be having a good listening to the "Epilog for Lisa".

Happy Trails - Cynical One Cyn1 , on the next song I will have some light-weight cab simulator going along, real-time. It will be better, you'll hear. And since its a lovely song (Anthrax - Indians), I hope you'll like it. This song has two guitars playing harmonies, so I am thinking of splitting the video but I've never done that, I might as well just record the rythm guitar on the left channel and then record the lead on the right channel, and shoot the video of the second (lead) guitar.

Anyone else having issues?

I had issues making it, that's why the first 5 seconds or so show the still image instead of video. Something went wrong. Making editing video editing with linux is a pain, I tried 7 different pieces of software (kdenlive, openshot, shotcut, cinerella, lightworks, flowblade, pitivi). Pitivi seems like the only one with some actual value as long as you don't involve audio tracks.

V2 : better synch/audio
Cyn1, this is the best quality video/audio recording I have done so far. Video making in Linux is 10 times harder than audio. I gotta make some notes or tutorial before I forget what I did.

Again, the quality of your videos has improved exponentially. Having tried Linux to record a few years ago I know what a PITA it can be to work with. The fact you're doing these on a laptop is impressive.
It's sad, in a way, that the debian distro of Studio64 I tried in 2011 is effectively dead, Ardour still requires a special build and WINE to port in .vsts and no one appears to be picking up the lance and charging forward. It seems just the opposite, as if no one that can write code for an open source OS even has video or audio recording\editing on their radar.
I can only image the travesty that video editing must be in Linux. There's probably more hope holding out for Android to develop the tools to do these tasks before the open source world pulls their head out of their @ss.
I'm still looking forward to the "Bad to the Bone" video played on your daughter's pink guitar...but hey, that's just me...

Happy Trails Cynical One hey thanx!, the pink guitar was sold, daughter never cared, but I owe this Shawn Lane song (Epilog for Liza), provided I find some backing track. Open source for Video editing works like commercial IMHO. There are fine programs for linux but cost money. Particularly Lighworks (even for Linux) cost some 200 USD yearly. (WTF!!!). But there are ways around. For audio, if we exclude VSTs there are a lot of LADSPA or LV2 (LADSPA v2) plugins that work nice. For instance the Cab sim I used for the last track (Anthrax Indians) was the "Simplistic Cab simulator" setting : Matched, and you heard yourself how full this sounds. So all in all, I wouldn't change the programming power of Unix just for the sake of ease. With linux e.g. for Cameras you can query exactly the characteristics and know before hand what to expect. With Windows I feel like in the dark, I'd have to change programs till a bad virus would do permanent damage. And to be frank about Open Source, there was always some big names behind (Sun Microsystems, IBM, Oracle, heck even Microsoft in some of them). Without a big name's funding no software would stand, in either form, closed or open source, at least that's my take.
