store.gibson.com/57-classic-pickup/I luck out with this "set", as the bridge and neck are the same pickup, so only one pickup need be analyzed. The inductance measure of 4.8H and the loaded peak of 2.33kHz puts it right in between the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary neck and bridge pickups, and would make it a bit darker than the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover set. The eddy losses appear to be higher with the 57 Classic than the 36th Anniversary or the Seth Lover. The peaks of the 57 Classic are roughly 0.5dB above the baseline voltage output, while the latter are closer to 1.5dB above the baseline, so that too might cause the 57 Classic to be a little darker, or bass/mids oriented. Gibson 57 Classic (Gibson 57 Classic Neck 860-15003-L 04/09/15) Series resistance: 8.04k ohms Slug coil (red & white): 4.04k ohms Screw coil (black & green): 4.00k ohms Series inductance: 4.831H @ 120Hz
Gauss: 300 slug, 220 screw ±30, AlNiCo 2
Unloaded: V: 18.3dBV f: 5.06kHz (black) Slug coil (red & white): V: 18.6dBV f: 6.58kHz (green) Screw coil (black & green): V: 17.0dBV f: 8.00kHz (gray) Loaded (200k & 470pF): V: 18.4dBV f: 2.33kHz (red)
Baseline: 17.6dBV Bode plots:These plots were made with the brushed nickel cover on the pickup: For some odd reason, the screw coil shows much higher eddy losses than the slug coil. Maybe the metal spacer is to blame. It's also unusual to see the unloaded peak have a lower Q than the loaded peak, but it seems that it owes to the higher eddy losses, which increase with frequency. With and without cover:Unloaded, the cover causes a 3.4dB amplitude loss, and 1.1dB loaded, which is higher than seen with with the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary or the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover, which both show losses right around 3.0dB, and 1.0dB loaded. The differences in amplitude loss would be inaudible between the brands, but in terms of frequency cut off, the Gibson brushed nickel cover causes the peak resonance to drop by 310Hz, where as the DiMarzio cover only caused the 36th Anniversary's peak to drop 180Hz and the Seth Lover dropped by only 150Hz. The combination of amplitude and frequency loss might cause the covered 57 Classic to sound a bit darker than the covered Seth or the 36th, all other things being equal. Long legs: The 57 Classic features a wood spacer: Info on how these tests are conducted guitarnuts2.proboards.com/thread/7723/measuring-electrical-properties-guitar-pickups
