I just got a Danelectro "Nifty Fifty" amp back from having the flakey circuit board, pots, input jack, etc. put back into place and reinforced. (See the Harmony Central reviews for the chief complaints about this amp.) Another gripe of most owners of this amp is its non-stop hiss, even when the pots are at zero. Somebody suggested a couple of fixes for the hiss, one of which was: "Buy a cheap two way speaker filter (rated ~100watts RMS max) with a 12dB/octave suppression and a cut freq of 3500Hz." My local amp doc didn't get around to doing that for me, but I have since read a subsequent post on HC that said the filter removes the hiss, but makes the amp too bassy for harp. (Blues harp, not the Celtic/angelic type.) The writer said he was going to try changing the cap value.
I think I've seen a table somewhere for frequency vs. capacitance, but maybe that was just for LC circuits. What-all besides the capacitor goes into a high-cut filter? Would a 6dB/octave suppression be better? And does anyone have a suggestion for a starting point for the cap value?
Thanks.
