Low power amps are popular with people who want the tone of an overdriven amplifier without in-your-face volume levels. I see, thanx, can you use normal cabinets with those? Or does the low power requires the use of appropriate matching cabinets? Also, if you want to use such an amp for a public appearance would you need a power amp?

There isn't a problem having speakers that are capable of handling more power than the amplifier can provide. Five watts can still create a lot of sound even with a modest speaker cabinet. If playing a large venue, just stick a mic in front of it.
