Hello, first time post here; I have an HSS, and on fender' site it states special pickup switching... It lists them by position: 1. full bridge humbucker (no Tone) 2. front coil of bridge pickup and middle pickup (lead tone) 3. middle (lead tone) 4. middle and neck (both tones) 5.neck (rhythm tone)
My question/problem is, is it common for the bridge humbucker on these particular models to hum despite being a humbucker? when I go to positions 2 and 4, the hum is almost nonexistent but position 1 3 and 5 all hum and the loudest hum/buzz is position 1. It seems to be a pretty hot pickup compared to the SC because output drops dramatically when switching from any position other than 1. I was going to take it back and have them look at it from a warranty perspective but then I figured I would be tweaking it anyway so I wanted to know if it was possible I have a bad HB in my guitar or should this be an easy problem to fix? The guitar is brand new stock I haven't even lifted the pickguard yet. Thanks in advance Don

you can always try to QTB it. warning: read the entire links listed in this page before doing mods, esp. if you're a noob in the electronics dept. check out the "technical" and "Protips" page too.

Deadgame,
welcome to Guitarnuts2!
i personally refer to 1 as neck and 5 as bridge, but since you listed things in the opposite direction, let's keep things the way you started during this conversation.
something does seem to be amiss here!
3 and 5 should be the worst for hum since they are both single coils.
2 should be hum cancelling, but might not be the best because the #of windings might quite different between a SC and one coil of the HB.
4 should be fairly quiet, since the neck and middle SCs should be close, if not the exact same number of windings.
1 SHOULD be the BEST of the bunch since we would expect the number of windings between the 2 HB coil to be the same AND they are right next to each other.
i think you would do well to go a guitar center or sam ash (you might have to go to columbus) and find a guitar like yours. plug it in and see if it acts the same way. i think it probably won't.
in either case you'll know if your's is "normal" or not.
if your's is NOT. it would make the most sense to have it fixed under warranty.
then if you want to do mods, that will give you a better platform to start from.
good luck,
unk
