Hello,
I am just preparing my next project. The conversion of my old Aria guitar from sunburst/rosewood fb/rails to white body/maple fb/original SCs. This the guitar I started with in 1984. Those were my very first pups. Now they are going back to where they belong.
Now the questions, I am looking after old deep purple, uriah heep, rainbow, yngwie sound. I dont care about hum, i got fed up with humbuckers (4 guitars with them already, two with DMZ, two with EMG). I am looking after a review!
I decided to go with 500k pots for extra brightness, and 0.047uF cap.
I just wanted to ask you about bridge pup and adding tone control to it. I am thinking of doing the old GN trick again. Bridging a 0.047uF cap between 6th and 7th lug on the 5-way switch, thus bring the actual value down by two (0.023uF). Will it sound OK??
What's your take on this?

So, you're proposing having a mid/bridge tone control? The usual mod for Strat-ish guitars puts the 2 tones on the neck and bridge pups alone, and leaves the mid pup without a tone control. That way, you can "dial in" the tone on the bridge for lead stuff, and it avoids the interaction of having two tone pots in the circuit at Position 4 (N + M)on the 5-way.
As for adding the cap, you might try simulating it both ways with JohnH's "Guitar Freq", see what you think looks better on paper.

Hello
just an update on this. I put the old pups on. Bridge is great. Positions 2,3,4,5 are all great. Neck (position 1) alone is fine as long as I am not playing low E. On low E it is just boomy, the opposite of the ideal classic strat tone. So, instead of swapping it out, is there any way to subtract some bass/low mids and add some mids?

Hi GD I reckon you could set uo a simple bass cut just for the neck pickup. The easiest version would be a small cap in series with ths neck hot wire before if gets to the switches. A rough guess would be 2nF, then vary to taste higher or lower. A variable version would have a 1M preset resistor in parallel with that cap. It would affect other combos that have neck though.

THANKS TON(E)S!!! before that, I might go down in gauge for the bass strings : from 9-46 -> 9-42

I think the lighter strings did the trick.
