I'm looking for a decent HSS wiring diagram with an auto coil tap. I found the diagram below (sorry it's small), but have a question: It describes the "north finish" and "south finish" wires as being tied off together. My question is, how do I identify those on my humbucker? I know the wires aren't labeled north finish and south finish. Thanks

I'm sure that this question has come up many times before, but I can't remember where and can't supply a link. Anyway, if you compare the diagrams on the Seymour Duncan website with those that use the "start" and "finish" nomenclature, here are the equivalents. South start = South(-) = Seymour Duncan green South finish = South(+) = S.D. red North finish = North(-) = S.D. white North start = North(+) = S.D. black Good luck

hey Frank, "fifty lashes with a wet noodle!" brand new member and no welcome? (okay Frank, you're still somewhat new, so we forgive you) ms960, WELCOME TO GN2! that list Frank gave you will work just fine if your pickup is a SD, or uses SD colors. (the red and white will already be tied together) if not, here are some other possibilities: www.ampge.com/SKGS/sk/Pickup%20color%20codes.htmunk

ms, First, as unklmickey says, to the Forums! Second, if you're into modding your guitar's innards, then you have a multilmeter already. This makes it simple as pie to determine which wire goes where. Notwithstanding unk's linked chart (is your rig on there?), all you need do is snip the wires apart, and connect two leads to your meter. Set your meter to read ohms, and if you get a reading of somewhere between 5 and 20Kohms, then you have a coil under your grip. If it is infinity, then test the remaining wires until you get a coil. Now, set your meter to AC volts (AC millivolts, if you've got it), and tap gently on one of the pole pieces. Did the reading jump? (If not, tap on the other coil's pole pieces, just to make sure.) Label the coil as either North or South, as it is physically oriented to the real world. Since you already know the colors of the paired wires (that you snipped), you now know which wire is the finish, and which one is the start for that coil. And you also know which is which for the remaining coil, so label that one too, you needn't test it for anything. (Except maybe to make sure it's working, but if it was fine before you took it all apart, then it's probably still good. ) HTH sumgai

Welcome! What make is your humbucker? Is it a 4-wire conductor type?

Hello all, First, my apologies for not saying hello before jumping in with my first question. Fifty lashes indeed! Secondly, the pickup I'm putting in my guitar is a GFS pickup, but I don't know if it's a 4-wire conductor (I should have it by weeks end): store.guitarfetish.com/alfatpafbohu1.htmlI have to be honest and say I haven't done much guitar modding yet, but being of a technical bent, it doesn't look too complicated. I do have a multimeter, and I will attempt to discern the leads using the method that Sumgai mentions above. I couldn't get to the www.ampage.com web site but will try it again later in case it's down. Thanks everyone ms

Yep, it says 'Coil-tappable wiring', so you're ok. The GFS pups should be same wire colour code as Seymour Duncan. I've bought a couple of sets of GFS pups now, both PAF-type HB's and s/c strat pups, really impressed for the money. Solder the red and the white wires together onto the 5-way switch as per the little diagram you posted. Wacth the pickup height as the output should be a lot louder than the s/c's.

ms, Unless your name is also Frank, then I think you'll find that unk was admonishing fobits for not being nice to you. Truly, fobits must have been distracted that day, it's not like him to forget his manners. ;D I don't know whats up with ampage, the link was good late yesterday afternoon. Hope it's temporary! sumgai

Fifty lashes accepted. I can only plead that I didn't realize that I had already been promoted to the welcoming committee. ms960 - Welcome to the forum! At the link you gave, it says that the pickup is supplied with full wiring instructions. If it is, then it should be easy to figure out, even if your switching is a bit more complicated. Guitar Fetish seems to be quite new and is seldom mentioned here, unlike Steward-McDonald and some other places. I placed an order with them and was very pleased with both their prices and service. The parts that I ordered, though, were from a guitar company's excess inventory and came without instructions. They didn't try to hide that, it was clearly explained. The price was one-third or even less of what you would pay at most places, a big saving in return for figuring it out yourself.

Good point. The pickups I have on order should have a detailed description. If not, and I can't figure this out, I'll be back.
Yes, they seem to have gotten a good reputation. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised as well.

you should find all the wiring info you need in my earlier post above, it worked fine for my paf-hb's from gfs.
