Hey all, I hope you are all fine. I had a few minutes to spare for a change and came across this thread. Me, I'd bring my acoustic (Yamaha FG-450S) and a cooler full of Muskoka Cream Ale and another cooler full of Fernandes Old Oak Rum, and probably a smaller cooler with some Tylenol, extra guitar strings and a comb I guess. I hope none of you actually get stranded on a deserted island, but if you do - and I am not sure how literal the definition in this question is allowed to be taken - but if this really was a deserted island (i.e. no longer inhabited by people) I hope it turns out to be the site of a really bad experiment by Gibson or something ... ... "Orville, I am not completely in agreement with this whole factory on a remote island concept". "Awww, can it, Festus." There could be some way better guitars there than mine, and maybe super-rare old scotch or rum or some such spirits - possibly a cot as well. That would be cool. But it's probably just a desert island somewhere, all alone and lonely. I can live with my acoustic, in that case (of rum). Cheers, D2o

I think that if you don't go about this trying to honestly prove that something works, or at least go about it in an unbiased manner, you're wasting your time.
I am encouraged by your gesture of actually trying something, and would genuinely appreciate your comments based on an honest and genuine effort to properly shield a stock strat-style guitar with traditional single coil pickups (no aftermarket noiseless, stacked SC, etc. etc.).
In my experiment, I was trying my damdest to prove someone's claim. Ultimately, I could not prove it ... but at least most everyone here is confident in the results.
If you don't already have a crappy strat-style guitar, do what I did ... buy a cheap one on Craigslist, do some shielding and wiring experiments on it, then sell it for what you paid for it.
Audio recordings of before and after would be very helpful in terms of deciphering real world results. Basically, when you are doing what you are supposed to do with the guitar, does the darned thing create less noise and hum after than before?

Kelloch, you are hereby accused of not acting in the spirit of a true Nut! ;D
Do some before and after experimenting : either you will prove your hypothesis and waste no more or your time shielding, or you disprove it and benefit from shielding.

Oops - I meant CFL (compact fluorescent lightbulbs). Sorry about that. They are horrible inventions for accompanying strat style guitars, so it could be something other than 60Hz hum is being reduced. As for altering the tone, I almost always find SCs a little too trebly - so it could be that tone was altered and I liked it. Entirely possible.

Hi gck,
You know, while I have tested the efficacy of shielding the pickup cavities and won't debate that, for all my shielding of SC pickups, I don't think I've ever objectively measured any results.
My gut says there is less hum and they are quiter and even more resistant to interference by, say, CFIs ... to the point that I always shield my SCs ... but I have no objective evidence to support my gut feeling.
I haven't been too active with wiring and the like over the last couple of years, but next time I have an opportunity I will try my darndest to remember to do some sort of objective testing.
One last point on shielding the SCs - I use copper strip, because I have it, not screen ... which is preferable but I don't have any.

Well ... I have shielded my pups (copper strip - not completely surrounded) and still found aluminum shielding of the cavity to be "worth it", as you say - and I've got bench testing to back it up.
Many others have shielded with the same results, even though they may not have recorded them.
And then there is you, Mr. Kelloch* ... if that is even your real name. This certainly begs the question of your so-called "research", Mr. Kelloch - have you actually bench-tested your hypothesis as some of us here have done? If so, let's see it!
Sincerely, D2o
* I have no idea if your name is Kelloch ... it just seemed to add a little something to my lame attempt at sounding 1930's reverent. Oh, and welcome! Welcome to GN2!

Well said, John. That is also what I think.

Yeah, another option to just loosen up the strings and then unscrew the neck, i mean putting back 4 screws is less trouble than restringing 6 strings, but its a PITA anyway you see it. Good idea (and Amen to the PITA). When I do this I wrap masking tape once around the neck (and strings) at the nut or the first fret - it holds the strings roughly where they should be and makes for a slightly lower PITA factor, but light tack masking tape isn't sticky enough to gum anything up badly. For some reason, I was under the impression that LP's original electric guitar experiments were basically a phone pickup on a 2" x 4", but - because people couldn't get their head around it - LP cut an Epiphone acoustic down the middle and attached a half to each side of the 2" x 4" ... so any use of the acoustic as the basis of an LP was window dressing.
Maybe I dreamed that up, so I'm going back to sleep now ...

Hey, Ange
I am curious if that could be a permanent (or even temporary) solution. I really don't know. No harm in trying, of course ...
FWIW, when I was in the same predicament, I very carefully pried the magnet out and flipped it (CAUTION: this can damage the magnet, so be mucho careful and be prepared to bail on the idea if it looks like it's not going along damage-free). Then I ran hot to ground and vice versa.
Not the real deal, but not bad for a free "fix".

I'm guessing he's inadvertantly changed the -1 to a +1 with that (neg) * (neg) maneuver?
[edit] Actually, that would only be the case if the sqrt of -1 produced a minus ... there cannot be a sqrt of -1.

I don't see any pictures either.
I didn't have any flags come up when I visited the site ... I got a little yellow yield sign ("done, but with errors on the page"), but that's not unusual for IE browser.
Looks like a neat little rig.
