3 position 4 pole rotary switch + strat selector?

I have a 3 position, 4 pole rotary switch a friend gave me.

I wanted to wire this in combination with the 5 way switch on my strat.

1st position to give the stock strat settings
2nd position to give neck+bridge in series (and other series combos)
3rd position (all on parallel and neck + bridge combo) and whatever is left over...

Anyone done this? How can I work this out?

That is a cool diagram.

Are the AC and D tabs on the rotary switch connected to the ACD tabs on the 5-way? That is alot of wires coming off the rotary!

Can any other wiring gurus verify this design? There is alot of soldering with this so would be cool to get a 2nd opinion before forging ahead!

That's right. A, C and D from the switch to A, C and D on the mixer. You can wire both A's, both C's and both D's in the switch to get only one wire to the mixer A, C and D.

Hi again m.

I read your message. As I tell in the diagram post it is a bit tricky, but works fine.

One thing that helps a bit if you can't understand the diagram is to draw the 3 possible diagrams independently as if the switch wasn't there.

In the position 1 the switch wires all the connection as in the Strat standard wiring, in the second position just the middle pickup is connected to the "pickup side" of the mixer, the neck pickup is connected to the D terminal, so it will be selected when the mixer is on the positions 1, 2, 4 and 5, that won't give "death positions" with no output and the bridge pickup is set in series with the output; on the 3rd position the BRIDGE (not the NECK) pickup is set to a special PICKUP-ON that gives the combos N+B and N+M+B and keep the M, M+B and B standard modes.

Of course, I've supossed you are going to replace one of the tone controls with the switch to keep the stock appearance, so I've rewired the new tone control to be a master tone control.

Just one more thing: I made a similar (not equal) mod to my Strat last January and you will love the "BRIDGE-ON Special" wiring and probably you'll soon forget that the rotary switch has a "1" position.

That's an excellent looking diagram. Something else to consider would be a SuperSwitch, which is 5Pos/4Pole, and will open up other possibilities.

How do you orient the switch??

On the top side there is a tab. The tab is near where the 3 positions are on the switch.
Would I take where the tab is to be the north side of the switch and orient the bottom wiring accordingly??

I orient the switch with the ABC connection side (pickup standard connection side) up on the diagram, but it doesn't matter too much as the stock mixer is "electrically" simetric, if you don't remove the mixer from the pickguard the correct connection will be to put the ABC tabs looking to the nearest cavity wall.

And YES, the pot's (both) can be linnear if you like their behavior. Any value from 250K up to 500K will be fine.

And YES, you can be the first to use this mod if you do it soon. Many people visits these pages.

Fortunately JLB left a bunch of notes scattered all over the image, so we can answer your question thus: connect the "mixer output" to the Yellow terminal (lower left of the four) in the center of the mixer switch (the 4P3T jobbie).

BTW, we never got final confirmation that this was finished, so you're now elected to be The Official Guinea Pig! ;D
