I'm in the process of building a modified nashville tele. I have SD Vintage stack tele pups and a "Lil '59" SC sized HB (side-by-each). I would like to configure these so that a maximum number of SC options act as hum-canceling. I will be using the switching config outlined in the "S-Tastic M-Provements?" thread (which employs a 4P5T switch) with an additional push button switching all pups from HB to coil cut.
To my ears these particular Duncans sound best in SC mode, but it occurred to me that I could get some hum canceling by selecting the right coils at each switch position.
So, my question, finally, is about tonal differences between the top and bottom coils of a stacked HB. Will I suffer tonally by selecting the lower coils to allow for hum canceling?

Its all about personal preference. To the trained or experienced ear you can tell the difference between the top and bottom coils. You wont "suffer" but others may not like your choice as much as theirs. Once again... its personal preference.
