i'm new here, so first of all, hi. here's what this thread is really about: i've come across a gibson pot, two 30 year old pots, two 4.7uf capacitors, a small PCB, a lot of wire, intermediate soldering skills, and a lot of time. i've been wanting to add a gain knob to my strat with what i already have. if not, what else do i need? also, i'm terrible at reading schematics so if anyone could make a diagram that'd be great.

The long and short of it is that you are in "deep weeds" without any knowledge of electronics. You don't know what you don't know. There is a very long path ahead towards enlightenment. Read/study a lot. What exactly is it that you need to do? Depending on the monetary value that you place on your "free time" (mine's around $100 per hour), you may be best satisfied by buying a preamp/gain kit (I know little about these since I don't care about them) and following the manufacturer's instructions regarding installation. There are those about this site that have such knowledge. You might consider posting "What preamp kit should I buy for my guitar". guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=1159184812&page=1Or, you just might consider an external gain boost pedal. Done IS.
