Hey all,
I have 500k pots and recently acquired EMG pickups (with 25k pots) problem is i can't get any long shaft pots in my area for 25k and i was wondering if i can use 500k with a 475kohm resistor in serial so that i can use it as a 25k pot
possible ? will it work well ?

hi Ang3lus, the answer to your question(s): absolutely NOT. no matter where you add 475k in series with the pot, it will only make matters worse. it will increase, rather than decrease the resistance. the reason you want a 25k pot, is to take advantage of the low impedance that is possible with an active pickup. if your pot is audio taper, just use it as it is. when the volume is at 10, the preamp in the pickup will provide a low impedance source feeding the cable, so the noise rejection and immunity from loss of highs in the cable will still be good. you will have to accept, that the higher impedance when the pot is reduced from 10, you begin to give up some of the inherent advantages. however, if your pot is linear taper, you can get a bit of improvement by putting a 100k resistor between the wiper and low terminal of the pot. and the function of the pot will resemble a log pot. for more understanding of how this works, go here: www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/potsecrets/potscret.htmgood luck, unk
