Ok, guys I can follow a wiring diagram, but I have changed out the pickups in a Squire strat with Tex Mex, and changed the 500k pots with 250's, and now the hum is worse when I touch the strings. As a matter of fact it is more a buzz than a hum. What did I do wront???

hey bignoot, first off i would like to say Welcome to GuitarNuts2. to me, it sounds like you have a ground wire that is loose. Open it back up and make sure everything is grounded correctly. here is a stock wiring diagram for a tex mex strat. also, may i suggest the Quieting The Beast Modfollow these two closely, and your strat should have nearly no hum/buzz and should sound great. Thanks for the welcome, I have checked all my solder joints, and all seem to be solid. I also failed to mention that I changed the wire size to match the size on the pups. (20) I may have used the wrong wire, but I don't see how. Before all these mods, there was little if any buzz or hum to this guitar. I used electronic solder, so this doesn't make sense to me.

try taking a multimeter and testing the resistance on the fround wires.

Sounds to me like hot and ground were reversed on the output jack. Possible? What kind of sounds do you get out of the amp?.

It doesn't look like it to me, but I am willing to try anything. The sound out of the amp is quiet till I touch the strings, then noise from you know where. I will look again, and will try changing that, that is easy enough. bignoot

Ok, you guys, I did a silly thing. I did put the wrong wire on the output jack, and I had to go to the Fender site to get one that you could read. While I was in there I changed the cap to a .022. Boy what a difference the whole thing sounds like a real guitar. Thanks guys, you are the best. Bignoot
