Any one know how hard it is to modify these? I just got myself a beautiful 2004 American Deluxe Strat HSS. I love the guitar, but I find the S-1 switch almost completely useless. The neck and middle in series setting is about the only one I'd even think about using, and the only one I care about keeping.
It supposedly gives you 10 combinations, only the bridge position is the same with the switch up or down (full humbucker). There's no option to have the humber split by itself, as in a bridge single coil position. I'd really like to have that option.
I also wouldn't mind having the option of having the split humbucker in parralel with the neck pickup - alah middle position tele.
Anybody know how hard it would be to perform these mods and would be able to tell me how to do it? The S-1 switch looks kind of complicated.

mrsooty, As it happens, I have the same guitar as you, only a year newer. I've posted several modification diagrams over the past year, but right now, my 'image server' (it's not...... ) is down, so there's no point in giving you any links to previous threads - sorry 'bout that! The switch itself is not complicated at all. It's nothing more than a 4PDT, with a circular printed circuit board attached to the lugs. You'll need a multimeter in order to see where each pin goes, lug to solder pad. Once that's done, you can plan out your actual wiring runs more easily. One caution, however. The solder pads are fairly small, and you can easily overheat them if you use a large soldering iron. I'd say that you should use no more than 40 watts - some of us use 15 watts with quite acceptable results. If you can submit your own drawings, that'd be great. We can critique them, and let you know if you're on the right track, or...... At the very least, tell us exactly which combinations you'd like to have. HTH sumgai

I'm in no position to provide my own drawings. I'm fine at following instructions (I did the QTB mod on my '57 reissue with good results, and have modified a couple of pedals) but I don't know enough about it to make my own ideas up.
As I said, I'm quite keen on keeping the neck and middle in series option, (switch down, position 5), and that's about it. I'd like to add a bridge single coil on it's own (1st position switch down preferably), and a tele style bridge single coil in parralel with neck.
I was thinking maybe the follwing: S-1 up - stock standard (I don't want to affect any of these positions) S-1 down - the following: pos 1: bridge single coil alone pos 2: ?? (maybe some kind of 3 single coil option) pos 3: neck and middle in series, in parralel with bridge humbucker pos 4: neck in parralel with bridge single coil pos 5: neck and middle in series (as it is currently)
Thanks for your help.
