HI All
Need advice on pickup wiring. I am putting together an HSS start.
How do you determine the start and finish of the pickup windings?. The humbucker has 4 wires so I can work out which coil is which but start/end?? Same with the single coils??
Any help appreciated.

Who manufactured these pickups? The company usually will tell you on its website which is the lead and which is the ground.

I have posted on my site all of the wire color codes for pickups that I could find. They're in the Pickups area. I also have a simple test for phasing so you can determine if your pickups are going to be in phase or out of phase before you wire them and reassemble the guitar - also in the pickups area under phasing. You'll need a multimeter for the test. Hope this helps. www.guitartechcraig.com/techpckp/indxpckp.htm

Craig,
I might suggest that a link to your post on pickup wire color codes be placed to the "Reference Article" section.
Any issues with this?
I also made your link a link.

anybody know what kind of pickups from a fender have a single wire for both the bridge and neck pickups? the neck outside insulation color is red and the bridge pickup insulation color is green - both are a cozx type wire. The middle pup is different and more like the standard fender pups and has two wires - but they are not white and black - they are brown and black. ANY HELP? ? please!!!!

rabiddogI haven't a clue. Maybe Lace? I think Sumgai or Chris would be more likely to know. GuitarTechCraigI like this even better than SK's color code chart. his uses cw/ccw and magnet polarity. yours indicates magnet polarity, but indicates signal phase rather than winding direction. It's more useful because of that.

John, As unk noted, Lace is the usual suspect for Fender pickups with coaxial cabling. However, it's also been my experience, and my presumption, that all Lace sensors are clearly labeled as such on the bottom plate (the bobbin). The pickup covers are not always a truthful clue in identifying a pickup! Most of Fender's higher-end pickups made in the last decade have identifying marks on them. For that matter, the same holds true for the majority of pickups made by the big-name boys. If yours are empty of such marks, then I'd hazard a guess that they are either pretty old, or were made in an off-shore factory that wasn't particularly brand conscious. I've never seen a Fender pickup, not even in a Squier, that had brown and black wires. I suspect either a home-made repair, or once again, an off-shore replacement. BTW, I see that one of your pups is an HB, but has only the coax coming out of it. That's gonna severely limit your options for tone selections. You might wanna think seriously about upgrading to a unit with 4 wires...... preferably a known brand unit. HTH sumgai

:oHey thanks guys, I dont know about lace but will check it out. the strat is the 83 version standard, but it has a 5-way selector and WAS wired wierd - like for just two positions. I have returned it to normal and the PUPs sound great! But I am still wondering, everywhere I look I see nothing like it. They are stagger type and not all even poles, but each is different. The only reason I wrote is NONE are HB. They are ALL SC, and they all REALLY have only two wires to the coil, either the color is different (for the 2 COAX ones), or in the case of the middle they have thicker single wires (pair). I thought Lace also had blue wires for certain models..... ? still purplexed, but not feeling as bad about it after ALL the looking I did at oicture after picture of pickguard ASMs and still not getting the OH YEAH dummy - those are XyZ... please still hep if YA can -- refreshing this post for near time....
