Hi all!
I recently bought a Fender Mexican HSS Strat. I didn't like the ceramic pickups (too tinny and not enough gain), so I bought a SD Pearly Gates Humbucker and 2 Fender Alnico III Hot Pickups (The Mid is Reverse Wound/Reverse Polarity). I took it to a guitar shop for installation. When I got the Guitar back, position 1, 3, 4 and 5 sounded absoloutely fantastic. But the number 2 position has a severe hollow, middley sound with a significant volume drop. Somehow I don't think it was wired in correctly. oes anyone have any idea what could cause this result? Any invaluable advice would be so much appreciated. Cheers and take good care. - Bill Smith

Hi Bill , welcome to GN2
Which combo are you referring to as No.2 - is it the bridge+middle or middle+neck? Do you know if the Hb has 4-conductors within a braided screen, or just 1? Do the Sc pups each have two unshieilded wires, or two or one wire within a braid?
It sounds like a phase problem between two pups of different manufacturers, or between two pups one of which is wired in reverse. If you could confirm the above, then there are several possible fixes.

Hi John:
Thanks for the reply. Combo #2 is Bridge+Middle. Don't know about the HB in terms of number of conductors but I assume 4 since it was a Seymour Duncan HB. The SC Pups did have two wires (Black & Red). Cheers and thanks !

OK, then the HB should, according to standard SD practice, have black wire to hot (on the 5-way switch), green to ground and red and white joined to each other. There should also be a bare wire going to ground.
The easiest fix, if it is out of phase with the middle is to swap black and green wires with each other, all others staying the same. Doing this will affect only position 2, leaving the others sounding unchanged.
let us know if it works!
cheers
John
