Hi. Ive purchased parts for a Tele style guitar from Warmoth, and a friend is doing most of the assembly, with some help from me. Ive purchased a Bareknuckle Brown Sugar neck pickup. The scratchplate has no mounting screw holes for the pickup, and i do prefer how that looks. However im keen to know whether mounting the pickup into the wood of the cavity will 1. result in a different sound, and 2. will it affect the shielding - can i just punch the mounting screws right through the copper foil, do the screws have to not be touching the copper foil, or would i be better to drill the 2 holes in the scratchplate and mount the pickup on it?
As long as the mounting screws are isolated from the pickup themselves (most are) I believe it should have no effect. If you wanted to be super sure, you can open a couple of holes in the foil to isolate the screw without seriously affecting the shielding. Anybody have any experience on this?
The no-screw pickguard is a nice look. My Tele has the screws but I never really notice them.
