Hi all, I have been modifying this guitar for some time, carving it and now installing the desired pickup combination. The bridge pickup is SD JB, then there is Dimarzio tele bridge pickup, then Fernandes Sustainer and finally DiMarzio neck pickup. I connect the Tele pickups to 3-way switch and from there to 5-way switch in the position of the middle pickup.. the idea is to be able to blend the pair to either JB or the sustainer. I want to be able to Tap-coil the JB...I can´t figure how to do that and connect it to the sustainer board. Can anybody help me? Thanks Odur P.S. I intended to add a picture of the guitar and the pickups but with no luck

Hi jkemmery and thanks for your reply. The JB has 4 wires+ 1 unshielded wire. I have checked the Seymour site but not found anything that is simular to what I´m trying to do.. B.t.w thanks for the info on posting pictures, here is the picture of the guitar: i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff184/odur_photo/gitar.jpg [/IMG] The work on the body is not finished. Thanks again, Odur

Here is a picture of the pickups and connections so far.. The sustainer is the 101 kit. Thanks, odur

Wow, nice mods! And a great site for electronics, whether it'll help or not, is: www.guitarelectronics.comLooks a seriously complicated set of wires, links etc there....! Good luck in completing it!

odur, I'd also like to welcome you here, it seems you're definitely on the right track for good things.
Nice idea for the 3way/5way wiring. Unless the sustainer needs some sort of odd input (and I can't see why), you should be able to use a switch to short the south coil of the JB to get coil splitting.

Thanks guys for your replys and warm welcomes, I was wondering as I use push/pull volume pot, if it would be ok to take the signal from the output of the volume pot and connect from there to the sustainer...the scematics that comes with the sustainer shows connection straight from the bridge humbucker. As I said earlier my intention is to be able to coil tap the SD. What is your opinion? Thanks, odur

odur,
My knowledge of sustainers is rather limited, but I'm pretty sure that they need some sort or input from a pup to work. If by "straight from the bridge" you mean a connection in series, then that's your input and you must wire it that way (though I think your coil split will be fine). There is a very lengthy sustainer thread here and while I haven't been able to keep up with that particular thread, there are a number who are quite up on sustainer technology and they might be able to help as well.

jk, It's in your thread here; guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=1190398477Sounds ok. Again, you'll have to visit the sustainer thread a'board here; guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=1136497404I believe that all of the pickups/coils with the exception of the sustainer drive coil (assuming that the sustainer has both a sensing coil and a driving coil) go to the signal input of the sustainer control module. Your replacement of a middle pickup with the Tele set is an excellent idea and should be fine. Only the drive to the sustainer drive coil comes from the output of the sustainer control module. If the sustainer only has one coil, things will get more complicated. As a result, splitting the JB as shown in JK's thread will do this. If you don't want to use a SPDT minitoggle for top/both/bottom coil selection, a lesser switch such as a SPST or pp pot can be used. This splitting occurs in the input structure and is combined by the 3 way and 5 way selector switches into a single drive signal to the sustainer control module. BTW, your JB pickup has the logo on the bridge side and the screw poles on the neck side. You have a neck model JB pickup there (which also rules out it being a TremBucker (TB-4) properly spaced for a vintage vibrato). Can you post or link to the schematics? From the sound of this statement it might be that the sustainer coil is only a drive coil, and thus not especially combinable with the other pickups while sustaining. And, the sustainer pickup connector in your pic only shows three wires. Once this is sorted out, the wiring design for the signal pickups will be straightforward. BTW, that is a strange guitar.

Hi ChrisK and thanks for your detailed post, It has taken me a long time to respond to your post because of great workload and little spare time . BTW, your JB pickup has the logo on the bridge side and the screw poles on the neck side. You have a neck model JB pickup there (which also rules out it being a TremBucker (TB-4) properly spaced for a vintage vibrato). Obbs.. I should have noticed that as I already own guitar with SD pickups (it was sold to me as bridge pickup). I have decided to stick with this pickup in that position for now...If it sounds terrible then I get me a proper bridge pickup . I managed to take a picture of the Fernandes diagram: Thanks, Odur
