Greetings ! I have an a vintage Japanese made les paul? w/ maxxon pups .I want to install new pups. Would i have to change the pots ? *The pots are 250k . If i would to upgrade to modern pups (humbuckers) would i have to upgrade pots also to 500k? or could i use the original 250k pots Thanks !
You could just as well use the 250k pots, they would work, but they will not let as much treble through as the 500k's. I'm sure other guys will fill you in more specifically with the fine details, but basically, to get the full range from any humbucker, 500k's will give you more high end when fully open. 250's tend to suit single coils better, as they stop them from sounding too bright, but of course going the other way is never out of the question if it suits ones sonic requirements.
In fact, if you have been unhappy with the present pickups using 250k pots, I would suggest replacing the pots first, just see if the change gives you what you want without having to spend out on new pickups. It may not be as exiting, but its a lot less fuss, and if you are anything like me, one new pickup is just the start of one long tone-hunt which could cost a fortune in solder alone!
Either way, enjoy experimenting,
