Hello fellow guitar players, I'm not completely new to guitar wiring mods, but it's been a while (10 years) since I did any! I have a Tanglewood electric travel guitar which has just 1 Humbucker with 1 volume and 1 tone. I want to add a DPDT mini toggle to allow some tone variations; ideally Parallel/Single/Series like in this schematic from the 'Schematics' Sub-forum: i37.photobucket.com/albums/e84/cekikta/Wiring/Modules/Parallel_Single_Series_20071025.pngI don't know how to translate that diagram into a practical wiring scheme, and I haven't found anything similar yet. My first attempt, in which I followed the diagram below, resulted in the loss of the tone pot (it's now a volume control ), and I must have wired it incorrectly. home.freeuk.com/airdutch/images/wdu_h011_02.jpgThe tone options were ok in that one, but Single/Humbucker/Single wasn't very satisfactory. I would appreciate any help you could give me this simple problem, thanks Rob /edit: btw, I'm using this pickup: humbucker.biz/hp31015/2-in-1-_Steg_Bridge_.htm?ITServ=C59cd9d09X118145c3a01X4141a four-conductor model with green/white and yellow/brown wires.

Well, this is a circuit module, schematically drawn such that it can be combined with other modules into a final wiring design. It's a module since these selections are intrinsic to a single pickup. That being said, along with your desire to use this module as THE wiring design, you need to translate it. In your design, "downwards" would go to signal ground. "Upwards" would go to the volume pot. The switch that you need for three positions of selection is the DPDT ON-ON-ON, or SP3T, or DPDT Center ON switch (it has many names). It is of course, a three position mini-toggle switch and the wiring of it is exactly as it is shown in the module's bottom view of the back of the switch. Coincidently ( ), the module also shows the internal connections when the switch is in its middle position, which is top coil. This might help for switches. Now, what does "top coil" mean" it means the coil that is selected as a function of how YOU wire the humbucker to it. I looked about on the Schaller site and could find no wiring info. I do not speak German, but I do translate it, to no avail. Here is a design for a single humbucker with volume and tone. As one can see, it is color coded for Duncan pickups. Hmmm, uh oh, here we go, Pickup Wire Colors and Polarity. This ought to translate Duncan wiring to Schaller wiring. Since you only have one pickup, out of phase will not be an issue with other pickups. "Top coil" as the selected middle position on the toggle switch in your case is not as meaningful as it would be on a pickup with dissimilar coils or pole pieces (screws or slugs). The Schaller pickup is touted for its "nearly identical" coils, so the only thing that you might care about is whether you get the coil closest to the bridge or farthest away. However, I would not worry aboot this. If you leave the wires from the pickup long and want the other coil to be the "top coil", just rotate the pickup 180 degrees and reverse the coil positions relative to the bridge. Done is.

Hi Chris, Thank you very much for that extremely comprehensive reply. You explained the 'upwards/downwards' part of the module perfectly, and I now know how to implement it. Having connected the pickup already in the previous (incorrect) configuration, I had identified which pair belongs to which coil, so I'll know how to connect them correctly ;D I will put it all into practice tomorrow and let you know how I got on. Cheers, Rob
