I'm in the process of 'quieting the beast' on (2) of my project guitars and I just realized that the negative terminal of the jack is connected to the case of the jack itself. Doesn't this go against the philosophy of isolating both - & + of the electronics from the shielding (via the cap)? Are there any jacks out there where the - is isolated?

Dan, You're correct, most output jacks do indeed violate the principles set forth by John Atchley. Sadly, the only way to truly isolate the jack is to use a plastic part! But if you're using a cable with a metal barrel, then there's still some danger present. Most cables today have molded ends, which are considerably safer in this regard. There's no way to safely (and cheaply!) eliminate all shock hazards 100%. Do the best you can, and remember to look both ways before you cross the street. HTH sumgai
