I had a Epi Les Paul(tm) brought to me for a really strange repair. The guy that owns this guitar tells me he has owned it since it was new 6 years ago. It has never been abused and by a little closer inspection I have found this to be true. Here is my strange dilemma. There is a strange ooze coming from both pups and it is not broken down wax or anything that seems to have been spilled or melted on or into the pups in any way. The mystery ooze is light brown in color and is semi tackey, but it also has an almost greasy feel and consistancy. Is this guitar possesed? Has anyone ever encountered this at ALL? Does anyone have a remote idea WHAT the heck this mystery ooze could be? I have cleaned them twice and it still continues to dribble. I had hoped to be able to clean them well enough to just re-pot them, but I don't think I could do this guy fair justice unless I knew how to remove this gook completely before re-potting. ALL your input is GREATLY appreciated on this MYSTERY.

That is bizarre. Where abouts on the pickup is it coming from?

From the bottom, which would be the pick guard side. There was some within the body cavity and when on a stand, it can sit for several days and it drools like it is sleeping really hard. LOL I have to find some comic relief in this or I will become agitated and do something stupid like replace them. Here is one of my thoughts on removal of this gunk and please tell me what you all think: I am sreiously considering a solution of boric acid and water, just enough to keep the insulation on the wires from getting soft. I have a small compressor that I use for air to blow them out, then put them in the oven on 130* for several hours to dry them up. If this works, re-potting would follow. OK there is my hypothetical plan of attack. RESPONSE PLEASE

Just a thought you might try emailing service@gibson.com. Clip the text you just wrote. They might be able to offer some better info.
Does the goo ever harden? It almost sounds like a synthetic potting compound. Usually this is held in place with a more solid "shell" or "skin" across the opening of the potting "box". Usually these synthetics are silicone based and just about NOTHING will disolve them. All you can do is find the crack in the "shell" and repair it with epoxy.
I've never heard of this in instuments, but it's very common in industrial electronics.

Hmmmm--- --- Does'nt get hard, it just slimes out. Good idea on the Gibson call. I'm almost certain it has something ot do with the potting of the pups, unless the guy HAS- -spilled a coke or some sort of dark cola product on it and did'nt tell me the truth.--- --- Any more ideas are more than welcome!!!

I have no advice to offer, just wondering if you found the source of the slime yet?

Not yet, but since cleaning 3 seperate times it has slowed considerably. I do delieve there was a thermal breakdown of the potting material used.-- -- Have contacted Gibson(tm) about this , and they were supposed to send me info. None to date....... ......so I will plunder on. Thanxx!!
