The laquer has worn off my maple fretboard exposing the bare wood. The wood has gone black from sweat and hand jam. Is there anything i can put on it, like wax or oil? I dont want to sand or re-laquer, as i will stuff it up.
Thanks in advance

I have heard that maple will start to mold if left exposed unlike rosewood. You might have to sand and refinish. Maby instead of sanding you could try some sort of cleaning product. I have no idea what thought.

Yeah, it seems like it has already started to mould. Its not too bad yet, I just want to stop it or slow it down. The laquer must have been realy thin on the edges. Hopefully the oil from my hands will seal it a bit. I dont know much about woods, but i know that i like white woods. So is it true that maple for example cannot be left unfinished?

Got my maple neck american strat in 73, I love maple necks too! So, been playing it for about 32 years..... I have the same problem, which has left me with a neck with black stains where the finish has 'cracked off'. Some years ago I tried to smooth the edges of the damaged finish, didn't work! I was wondering about bleaching the neck and then giving it a fresh coat or two of finish. Any ideas?
