Hello all! I'm building a 4 string bass with a pair of active EMG J pickups, and a 34" scale. Is there a precise position to mount them, with respect to the bridge? Does it matter that much? Any ideas are appreciated!

Really, it's up to you; they don't have to be at any particular spot. Just rememeber that closer to the bridge will be more pingy and clear and high, and farther away will make more boomy bass and less defined treble... that's your wall-shaking pickup. XD

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll experiment until I get that wall-shaking sound!

Au Contrair.
There is vast discussion on the net related to positioning of the pups and a strong opinion out there to avoid the harmonic producing positions. For example, Ed Roman, who is not universally liked, but is willing to voice his opinion ad nauseum, declares that any guitar with less 24 frets is junk because the pup usally gets installed on 21 and 22 fret guits right on the 24th fret position which is highly harmonic. I am not sure but there is some claim that harmonic positioned geographys somehow produce offsetting harmonics that cancel out some of the full frequencies.
Somewhere in httm world is a site I have seen, but apparently did not bookmark, at least on this computer, that has elaborate relative measurement for best tonal production.
So there are a lot of opinions about best location.
One other tidbit. the old original Peter Green 58 LP reversed the adjustable poles coil on the neck pup, and his protoge, Gary Moore, does the same on his guitars, ostensibly for the harmonic cancellation theory. Their tone's are pretty d--- good.
But like a lot of gospel out there it is hard to separate myth, religion and faith amongst guitarists.
Toneplastic, live on.
